I should know better by now, but I'm on the verge of convincing the wife she NEEDS a Disco. Has anyone put together a chart showing which model years have CDLs and which do not? I can't remember. I know all the D1s had it, and then the D2s had it but wasn't connected, then they lost it all together. What's the actual chronology?

D2s up to mid 2001 have CDL.

You do realize its not actuated on these D2s? You have to install a lever or cable or something.

speaking of cdls. Is there a trick to locking it? I can go in and out of low range, but there seems to be no movement of the linkage right to left. should the vehicle be rolling? shift it from neutral? the owner's manual is very vague

All D1s have a locking CDL. High-low moves forward back and Lock-unlock moves left right.

No D2 (except 2004) has a locking CDL lever. 1999-mid 2001 D2s have the transfer case with the ability to lock the CDL. This means there is a nut on the top, that you can turn via wrench, D1 lever, solenoid, etc. Late 2001-2003 do not have this nut and require a new box.

I picked up a D1 lever on Ebay to lock my CDL.

I have a 2001 that was manufactured December, 2000. It has the CDL knob and I have installed a D1 shifter to enable it. It's the cheapest and the best upgrade I've done.

My girlfreind just bought a 2002 Discovery. I haven't crawled under it yet to check but I'll let you know the manufacture date and whether or not it has the CDL.

Croakus,
Let me know when you crawl under her and check. I'll do the same to my girlfriend and we can compare dates and CDL info!

The prize goes to Jamil for the most comprehensive and definitive response. Thanks to everyone for the feedback. I have my '96 and will be replacing a '89 Trooper II that literally rusted apart after 15 reliable years. Looks like no CDL for D2 unless I go back to '00, +/- 6 mos. Not interested in a 2004.
