Hello,

I did some searching on the site and found that Amsoil, Royal Purple, Redline, and Mobil are all great fluids but I can only source the Mobil locally so it looks like that is what I will be going with.

Anyway I called the local Land Rover dealer to find out how much it will take. They told me to pick up six litres because they will only be able to drain out half of the fluid. Then they added "since we can only drain half the fluid then you probably shouldn't even bother with the synthetic at all". Is this another classic example of a Land Rover dealer not knowing what they are talking about?

I heard that you can stick a hose down in the trans and suck out the vast majority of fluid. What do you suggest I do? Should I go to a garage that knows what they are doing? Should I still get the synthetic or just go with the stock ATF the garage has? By the way the LR told me the disco takes 13 liters in total. I have a 96 disco 1.

A lot of people drain/fill/drive a few miles 3 or 4 times to increase the concentration of synthetic to close to 100%.

Otherwise your ZF 4hp22 was used on many bmws, peugeots and volvos from the late 80's up. There is nothing particulary special to it (no electronic controls), so many shops can work on it.

When you drain the trans pan, only about 6 qts/8 liters drains out, even when I replaced the filter. That is why I drain what fluid I can, replace the exact amount (to the 'full' mark on the dipstick) and run the vehicle for a few hundred miles. I then drain/replace again. Do this until you have theoretically replaced the fluid. I suppose the trick is to get the percentage of old fluid low enough that it doesn't matter. Someone else can post with percentages, etc.

As for fluid extraction, I don't know. However, the dipstick protrudes into the pan, so you would extract fluid from the pan. When you drain the pan through the drain plug, what is the difference except for a clean back?

Hmmm I just drained my trans fluid and it only took 4 quarts to get it to the full mark on the dipstick.

I checked the level when cold with engine idling after cycling the trans from park to drive and back to park

Is something wrong in the method im using to check the fluid level

No, you're fine. The amount that drains out actually varies. I've had as little as 4 qts and as much as 7 qts.

Theoretically, if you do the drain/fill/drive 5 times you should have the non-synth down to about 3 or 4% (assuming you drain 1/2 the total fluid each time). You probably don't need to do that many, 3 will probably be close enough. If you get more than 1/2 of the total out each drain then these percentages will be lower.

first time: 50% left
second time: 25% left
third time: 12.5%
fourth time: 6.25%
fifth time: 3.125%

If you lift it up on 4 axle stands, you won't need to keep driving it around repeatedly.

I've never messed with the transmission fluid in a disco, but a friend of mine has a Ford pickup -- when he replaced his fluid, he took the pan off to get all of it out. He also got soaked with the fluid since he didn't have anything to catch it with -- not the brightest crayon in the box.

James,
If you want to switch and get all the fluid out. You can drain the fluid at the pan and refill with the new fluid and overfill it by about two quarts.

The next step is pretty messy and you might need a helper. Next, disconnect one of the return lines at the radiator. Put a hose on the fitting at the radiator into a plastic milk container, next put the cooler line into a second plastic container. Now start the engine briefly and see which container/hose squirts ATF.

Now here's the fun part.. Have two additional containers ready and have your bottles of new ATF open and ready to go. Now start the engine again and as that container fills up, change the container and add additional fluid, being careful not to run the trans low on fluid. If you careful, you should be able to 99% of the old fluid out.

After your done, clean up the mess and reinstall the cooler line and top off the trans fluid

Have you ever tried this? I am not sure how fast you can add new fluid. If things run dry, you are screwed!

So what type of synthetic are you guys using? I am due here for a transmission fluid change soon.
i have a DII - 2000.

Hey guys, thanks for the info.

I just sourced a local AMSOIL dealer and the guy is dropping off the fluid right now. Hope this stuff is as good as everyone says it is!

Yes I do it this way all the time although we use a 20 gallon drum to catch the oil, if you got one person pouring it sould be fine. Of course, have all your bottles open and ready to fill.

If you don't feel comfortable about it then I just start it up, run it until 2-3 quarts comes out, then turn it off and refill it and repeat the process. You'll be surprised that it doesn't comeout as fast as you think.

While you obviously don't want to run it for 10 minutes, but you are not screwed if you run out of fluid. The pump will stop pumping and if you turn off the engine and refill it it'll be just fine.
