Mass air flow sensor.

Sounds like this needs replaced at certain intervals. I was told the emssions are affected by this at around 53K on DIIs. Will cause the service engine soon light to come on.

Where can one purchase this? Where is it on the engine? Thanks.

its located on the air intake tube, just behind the air cleaner. it has 5 or six wires going into it and is mounted in a round connector piece. NOTE: it has some sort of "special" star head screws holding it in to the tube, i dont have this tool-bummer,or perhaps the replacement part is the whole tube thing? it is $147 at rover dealer, $133 from british pacific. I've cleaned mine with hexane spray(contact cleaner)and i'm waiting for my new OBD tester to arrive to reset the "check engine soon" light. fwiw, dealer wanted $270 to replace -sheesh

Dave - in your case undo the battery to reset the light.

Thanks! I wonder if you can just keep cleaning it and never replace? Dealer told me $300 as well.

Yes, that is a MAFS. Cleaning it works sometimes for awhile, sometimes never. Changing it is simple, so buy the part as cheap as you can find it and DIY.

Where does one find hexane spray? How long are these good for? I found one with 42K on it - sounds like that one only has 10K left - opinions?

How do you change it? Should i go ahead and do it or wait until the light goes on? It looks like there are some star screws - just need some advice. thanks!

Cleaned mine with alcohol and some Q-tips. You don't need to undo the star screws as the q-tip will reach.

So far no more light, but it is too early to tell how long that will last.

Blues, i found it at sears hardware, but any auto store or even radio shack should have some. Dean, i didn't think you could reset the "check engine soon" light by just powering down. umph.. any way since the obd tester is coming i got to have something to do with it, so for now the light stays on. and ya i'll probably end up changing the maf soon enough

Dean is correct. Disconnecting the battery will do the trick to reset the light. I was originally told differently as well.

What OBD scanner did you get? Is it a 2-way scanner? Not all scanners can reset trouble codes so you may end up having to disconnect the battery anyhow.

I just wish autotap still had their trade in program! I was hoping to get my GM autotap upgraded to a universal.

PS. I'm really starting to hate OBDII. Here in NC they connect directly to it to do their state inspections. Just about any code = failed (including SES light). New cars are failing just as often as older clunkers.

justin, thanks for confirming the power down reset deal. I bought an equus model 3100, $119 -free shipping from midway in dallas, supposed to do enough to be worth the cost, like reset CEL and clear codes, we'll see, ya only get what ya pay for

I was having serious idle issues because of my MAF at 53k. Discount Rovers delivered one to my house withing 3 hours. I think the cost was around $150. Replacing the MAF fixed my idle issue immediately.

Well, as Murphy's law predicts.... just got my new OBD tester yesterday and..this morning the CES light was not lit for the first time in a month or so. any ideas as to why this morning it would not be on? looks like the mileage just ticked over 53,500.. auto reset after cleaning the MAFS? Murphy's a bastard
