hunting idle when starting - it goes up and down until it finally comes to rest around 700 rpm's. Isn't this a bad fuel temp sensor? Clean stepper, new thermostat, fuel pressure is fine. I can actually give it gas and hold the idle, it may stall 50% of the time. 96 D1.

Thanks Joe

I have the same problem on my '96, although not as frequently.

I hooked mine up to an OBD2 tester and it looks like I need a new fuel temp sensor.

I don't have much time/money to worry about replacing it at this juncture, so I just rev it up to 2500 RPMs or so, and pop it into Drive or Reverse before it has a chance to stall out on me.

Probably not the best solution, but hey...

I'm in Boulder, Joe, and apparently there's a good Rover garage up in Nederland called "Auto Technica". Have you had any experience with them?

Felix - sounds like I need to find a cheap fuel temp sensor. I've never used that shop in Nederland but I've had success with a shop here in Denver. I think I may try to go up to Nederaland & run Switzerland trail w/ the GF and take the dogs for a hike. Ever run that trail? I heard it is pretty easy but nice scenery.

Not sure about the 96 but we had the same issue on a 94 and it was indeed the fuel temp sensor.

I was down at the Forest Service info station outside of Lyons, and they said most of the trails up there are closed, although I wonder myself.

When were you thinking of heading up there?

I may try to go up on Sunday. If the trails are closed we may try to do some hiking and let the dogs run. Any ideas if I could call anyone to see if those trails are actually closed? In my experience they don't actually close the trails - they just put up a sign or something. I don't feel like getting stuck in deep snow anyway.

One of my good friends works with the Forest Service, so he made a few calls (we go wheeling together fairly often).

He says they shut the gates this time of year because it's when the snow is often the heaviest. I'm speaking specifically of Rollins Past West, the Vrain trails near Lyons, and the Ward-Jamestown fireroads. We went up on a road past Lefthand Canyon last weekend, and I got embarrassingly stuck in the snow while his V6 Isuzu Trooper trucked on!

I was probably gonna drive up that way this weekend myself, so I'll talk to him and post back here in a day or two.

Joe B --

I just spent 4 hours with my buddies trying to get my Rover out of Switzerland Trail. It's open but covered in deep wet snow. I was doing fine going down the trail, but it was getting dark and I was low on gas, so I had to turn around.

Long story short my buddy and I had to walk 4 miles down Sugarloaf Road to get within cell phone reception to call a recovery vehicle out. It was terrible. Also, I'm not very pleased with my Rover's performance in the snow as of late... ho hum.

Maybe your "vehicle" is not pleased with your performance in the snow..........
