I'm considering buying a 94 D1 110K with apparently a blown-up engine, although its not clear to me that its just not starting. But anyway if it needs a rebuild, what kind of hurdles are involved in this? I've worked on cylinder heads before, are these engines easy enough to work on? Do people generally just buy a new block? Or make their own repairs? Or get an engine swap or rebuild?

Its $2500 including delivery to my house. I'm gonna take a look in a couple of days, just wanted some insight or opinions.

Thanks

Dean

if not a new block can be had for about $1200 or a complete used motor for about $1800.

Good project
But what is a 94 worth when its running?
Reduce by cost of engine and install = ????less than $2,500

They seem to be selling for around 5000-5500 for a decent one.

Dean,

IMO, with a strong engine, you'll get at least 100k miles. Only other major headache might be the trans in another 50k miles.

Transfer case and diffs should last 250k easy as long as they are well lubed, everything else is DIY and not worth mentioning as a major headache.

So for under 5k you'll have a truck with basically a new engine.

Sounds good to me.

Let me know if you get it, I'll help you pull the engine and drop in the new one. I've also got a trailer if you need to haul it anywhere.

Jaime thanks! You have a trailer? Do you think a shop press will fit on it? :-) What are you doing this weekend? Peter may be coming over on Saturday, I was going to rent a pickup truck to get the shop press (700 lb) from a depot a few miles away from my house, but if you can make that day we could maybe also try to figure out whats up with the engine, if I have it by then. Email me your number again will you?

I just sourced a 95 engine for a friend ...paid 700 on a pallet plus 225 shipping to his door.

car-part.com

call around and haggle, the posted prices are not what they sell for. the one I found was listed at 2200.

sounds like you have a new mud-buggy coming:-)

No mud for this one Thom! Would make the other one jealous:-)

Thanks for the link. Was that a new engine? Block and heads or what?

Dean

it was a complete engine out of a 95 disco with 67k on the ticker...the salvage yard even faxed me the salvage certificate from the insurance adjuster:-)

and when I say complete I mean complete, it had all the brackets the A/C compressor power steering and alternator all still in place. The salvage yard said he didnt have much call for rover parts so he'd throw in all the goodies.

look around and you will find a good deal

Thom

Dean, if you want, Ron said he'd help you out.
Early '94s are tricky with the front cover & cam. You'll have to figure out if it's early or late. E-mail Ron if you want...

:-)

No the guy will flat bed it to me as soon as he gets another delivery or something - he works for the AAA and a garage. He said maybe this weekend or next week. I'm in no particular hurry to get it done, its a spare anyway. SUpposedly it won't even crank over with a breaker bar, but I'm not sure how he knows that, but anyway sounds like a new short block to me or a rebuild, but we'll see.

Maybe we need to bring over the guy that bought our 107. It's engine wouldn't turn, even with RON and a breaker bar... Ron tried so hard for so long to get the stupid thing to turn. It sits for months & months. I finally decide we're going to sell it. Find a buyer, the guy comes up to look at it, he goes up to the engine, and it spins easily. Figures... Ron was so mad! (The whole reason he got the thing was for the engine...) Maybe that guy just has the magic touch...
