At recent service, my local Independent LR Shop recommends rebuild of my 96 Disco's rear diff with ring/pinion ratio at 3.8:1 and sporting ARB locker. Axles are Great Basins. I spoke with Bill at Great Basin, he said a normally technically inclined handy person could handle this. Problem is that I have a PHD in web surfing with a minor in couch potato. What would be a fair shop cost to handle the rebuild?

I don't think they know what they are talking about since both front and rear diffs need to be geared the same. Do you think you need ARBs and lower gearing?

Bill's opinion of people is usually favorable-biased :-)
Yes, it can be done by a normally technically inclined person.
The shop is likely to quote a book value for labor time, to a tune of 4-6 hours per axle, plus parts.

Miss quoted my current diff situation. Already have 3.8:1 with ARB locker front and rear. The rear seams a little suspect upon fluid change. Shudder at decel from 20 mph to zero and or when making sharp turn. Some low level howling as well.

Wonder if its siezed up or locked. Definitely open it up and take a look. ARB will recon their units.

Will,

Assuming a typical rebuild in which you bring the shop your removed 3rd member (super easy to take out) you can assume about $250 in labor and probably about $100-150 in new bearings.

Thanks,

I do appreciate the feedback.
However with all things considered, I had my local shop quote me worst case where if necessary they would replace everything housing, locker, bearings, seals, and R&P at ~$1,500. 8+hrs + parts, California shop mind you. Scheduled operation is next Monday morning. I'll be there with digital camera in hand when they pull the third member.

Everyone here (CJ fans) have convinced me to leave it to the shop, not a non confidence issue on my behalf, just their bad experiences with domestic car repairs. I thought Just Empty Every Pocket was reserved for Jeeps only
