Anyone got a digital SLR camera (w/ interchangeable lenses)? THey are finally coming down to realistic prices and good speeds/res, and I'm considering the Canon D60. But its still expensive (2K, for the body only). I just want to hear anyone's experiences / preferences.

Dean,

I have the Canon D30. It absolutely rocks. The D60 is basically the same camera with an enhanced sensor and a couple of other mild improvements. If you already have Canon EF lenses (I did) then there really is no other option beyond the D30 except the new Sigma SD-9. The Canon's overall quality will blow away the Sigma. Also - at $2K it is quite a steal. I paid $2200 for my D30 in January. Retail for the D30 started at $3.5K and the EOS D-1 is around $5K still.

You will also want to get the battery grip and an extra battery. Factor in a couple of good 256M Flash cards also. I use those and a 1G Microdrive. With the 1G MD and two batteries I can shoot 800 shots in Hi-Res .jpeg. About 350 in RAW format. The D60 uses a lot more memory so think BIG.

I have lots more info, but e me at curtis@newkirks.net for more info.

I have the Nikon D1x. Other than having to adjust by shooting style to the 1.5x factor, it's been great. There are some other things that you'll have to adjust to between the two mediums. I sure miss the wide end of my 17-35 though (don't have a 14 yet). When I need to shoot wide I go back to film. Yes, digital is expensive, but when I'm doing editorial photography, digital is a must.
