The fuel gauge on my 1996 Discovery just went out. It reads empty and the warning light is on even though the tank is near full. I have been reading through my manuals (Workshop and Haynes), but haven't found any direct information on how to repair or replace the fuel gauge unit. Is it part of the fuel pump assembly? If so, does that mean I have to replace the whole fuel pump assembly in order to get a fuel gauge that works? I just had the fuel pump assembly replaced last March and don't want to go through that expense again.

I have also checked through the search archieves on this website, but found no references to fuel gauge. Please help.

The guage is a part of the pump assembly. The way it works, is that a moving contact arm rises and falls with the gas level - I would pull the pump and check to make sure that the contact arm is in fact touching to correct position or if the entire arm has fallen off inside the fuel tank.

If those are OK, you might have to replace the pump assembly. March isn't that long ago - does your fuel pump have a year parts warranty?

Thanks for the advice, Porter. I was out in the garage checking the pump. Did not pull it out of the tank because I didn't want to mess with potential fuel fumes. Did notice that the electric harness has some corrosion, though the pump still gets electricity. (Obviously, since it still works.) I don't know about a warranty. I bought the pump from RoversNorth and had them ship it to a small independent shop in Bozeman, MT for installation. (Long story: I had to leave my truck there while traveling on to a new job. Went back the next week to pick it up when they finished the install.) I'm getting ready to call RoversNorth now to ask about the pump and any warranty.
