I went to the dealership (Jax, FL)to get a gasket. They had one of the new RR. It looks to fancy. they already sold 7 of them and note one is sold to David Duval the golfer.

I had the chance to take an up close look here in Columbia, SC. Engine is covered by a cowling, nothing servicable except for oil change. Transmission, transfer box and differentials are all sealed units. Center console on dash has a computer display, with repeater low center of instrument cluster. Ignition switch is not a switch, just a contact for the master computer to initiate engine start and is located on console by gear selector. I suspect first major power gig will leave you stuck somewhere far, far away from any dealership. On the plus side, the upholstery is just perfect for sex: smooth, firm and just enough cushion for pushin.

If they can afford a *new* Rangie, then it's safe to say there will be nationwide tow coverage!

Heck, the computer will probably tell the tow company when it's about to die and where it'll end up given current speed!

We sat in the new Rangie this morning. The noticeable thing for us was the cavernous back seat room for the passengers. Beyond that it was nice, but didn't strike us as plushed-out to the max. David liked the ignition placement on the console. For my $70K you can keep it. We noticed the practically sealed up engine compartment, too. I dunno, overall it was only interesting, not appealing.

I had a quick look at one last week. Super sexy, I would have to say. Didn't get under it much, but I did see gas tank protection.

There was some sort of weird cupholder-like thing in the center console with a flip-up lid. No one knew what it was, any ideas?

Blue, it looks like you renovated the garage too. A little more spacious. I like it :) Did you keep the Disco bumper for the first rangie upgrade? Add a KVT blade and a winch and call it trail ready.

I like the Disco better.

The undercarriage is actually extremely well protected, with nothing hanging down to get hung up. Plus, as you go up on the air suspension, you increase ground clearance. You can go *over* WAY bigger rocks with the new RR than you can with a Disco or older RR. These vehicles are AMAZING off road. Other than the size, which is really the only limiting factor, this new Rover makes extremely difficult trails seem like a cake walk. ...and the ride off-road is so smooth I actually fell asleep in the back seat. Try accomplishing that in a Defender!

Alyssa,

Completely right. My friend attended the training recently and came back with a video. Taking a 3+ trail the wrong way in any stock vehicle with road Goodyears is pretty cool in my book.

The Monocoque frame is so rigid you can hang it from it's front tow hook with two more rangies hung from the rear.

Try over 10 inches of articulation all around, 11 inches of ground clearance, and solid axel simulation...what's that?

It's where the computer simulates a live axel by pressuring the appropriate wheels where a live axel would be heavier than independant suspension.

That underbody stuff is built pretty damn tough, too. I was sketchy when I saw it in a magazine, but upon closer inspection in person, it's heavy duty as hell. That stuff is built way tougher than the stuff on our Hummers.

These things kick ass off road, anyone who has driven them will attest to that. It dosen't look like it would be possible, as they use some controversial technologies. The problem with those technologies before was that no one had done them right. They said it couldn't be done, now it has.

There is the question of how well that will hold up in the long run, but they built it in the shadow of the unreliable previous model, and it looks like they learned from their mistakes.

Oh, by the way (little known fact) it was designed under BMW rule, but the british design team won the rights. This car was concieved as the rightful heir to the Range Rover throne. I think it may be, though it might take a little getting used to, but then... Didn't the original?

Cheers,

Kennith

The rear end with the exception of the tail lights looks sooooo much better than the P38A RR- for all you who aren't into Range Rover Specifics, P38A is the RRII, the one that will be forgotten by purists like myself- Sort of like the Jaguars that came out during 88-93-with the silly SQUARE headlights-

The end-thing I love about the rear end is how it is correctly designed the way the Classic rear is designed.

Alyssa, how does it smell on the inside- Is it that pure Land Rover new care scent, or is it FORD new car scent-
I will be going out Friday to kick the tires on one. Thats if there is one on the lot over at Land Rover Hunt Valley- If not there, I'll hopefully see one at Land Rover Greensboro, or Land Rover Cary, or Land Rover Wilmington(Cape Fear).

Ford had nothing to do with it! ...and frankly, I don't know what the inside of a new ford smells like.... do you?

Not that Ford had anything to do with it, but the inside "new car smell" of Land Rovers circa 91-95, with some exception to Disco during 96 forward(the interior got some cheapness in quality with regargs to "hides") all had the same smell due to the scent of the hides.
People usually don't notice the similarities of brand makes (ie. the "new" Ifinity I35 and the "new" Nissian Altima, -Toyota Camary/Lexus ES300) so picking up on the scent of the hides is usually not noticable for those who aren't into the details as I am. The scent of a Ford when "brand new" has this scent that usually smells like "high quality plastic", and it is noticable throughout brand models, regardless of dealer invoice- If you sniff the insides of an Excursion, and then head over to smell the inside of an Aspire, you will then understand the "sameness" that I am speaking of.

Of course I am aware that ford had nothing to do with the design of the RRIII-all BMW from 95-01, but you can be sure that the later production of the RRIII will recieve some FORD treatment- Ford V8, doubt Ford will put the Aston V12 under the clam shell bonnet-

So with that being said, I was only makeing an underhanded attempt to undermine the future of the RRIII by implying that it smelled like the inside of a "new" Ford, instead of the inside of a BMW-

RangeRoverF150 Eddie Bauer edition, RangeRoverF250Lariant Crew Cab, RRF350SuperDuty

Just wasting some time today being silly and posting useless jargon-

After seeing, sitting, looking, etc. the new RR, one of my thoughts was how would you mount a winch on the front of it. Anything is possible of course, yet, the design/looks just don't seem to lend themselves to this type of modification. So, while probably a very capable Rover in stock form, feel it will have limitations to easily accept some of the mods possible on other Rovers. Hopefully though many will buy it, the coffers will increase, and other Rovers will come to us.

"I don't know what the inside of a new ford smells like.... do you?"

Yes you do. Remember the F250? ah the smell of new plastic and diesel exhaust. Now as far as car scents you cannot beat the smell of old series truck. They have this wonderful aroma of old 90wt and electrical fire that is unmistakeable.

Blue,

Now all you need is to ditch the air shocks, get Custom ECRF Fender Flares, Safari Gard Coil over suspension and some 36 inch meats

Oh, it's already on a flatbed bound for ECR for some custom work, then it'll go to $G to serve as a test-bed for the new 5-link prototype...44's baby...

Nice cut and paste job glenn. Looks like you have put J**P wheels on that nice new Rangie.

LOL...

Anon, it's really not just a simple cut and paste. I had to hack the fenders to fit those meats. I also had to "trace out" the body and lift it to clear the 44 inchers! Took me about 5 - 10 minutes to do the mods!

Oh the beauty of Photoshop! Wish modding my rig was that fast and simple.

Now ready to cyber wheel!

It'll be a real bad day when you roll that new rangie on the trail and have to call the ol' insurance agent to file the claim. OUCH!!
