Just noticed the tach needle on my 95' D1 is bouncing around. At start it goes up to the idle rpm but while driving the needle will drop to zero, stay there and maybe bounce up to the driving rpm. Any ideas? Thxs. Gregg

i have read right here on this board many times that its an indication of either.
A) bad/loose electrical connections at alternator
B) Alternator going bad.
check, or have the charging system tested.

Gregg - I had same problem last summer. For me it was the tach lead on the top of the alternator. I pulled it, cleaned both sides & re-soldered it. Fixed immediately. Original alternator.

One of two things:

1) Alternator - test at Autozone for free

2) On rear of alternator (under black cover) is a small plug. Pull it off and clean it.

And don't go with a rebuilt alternator unless you enjoy putting a new one in every 10k or so. Go with a Mean Green alternator. Heavy duty and no worries. (at least for me in 50k or so miles)

Mine just gave up the ghost over the weekend, but I think its more terminal than a loose wire. For a while now, there has been a micro drain on the battery and it dawned on me just a few days ago that after 130k miles (and lots of mud) that it might just be the alternators electronics about to go buzz....sure enough, on the way to coach the kids basketball the tach gave a last breath and died...

Mine did that a couple of summers ago, ended up being a fault in a electric relay or some sorts under carriage, no problem with the alternator though.

Going to A-Zone today to have the alt checked out. I'll check the tach lead too. Can get a rebuilt for $210USD. I've looked through the posts and the Mean Green sounds likes a tough mother. How much for the Mean Green?? and is it worth the difference. I know that a Bosch rebuild is alot more than $210 but I don't need top line but want to get some bang for the buck. Gregg

Alternator checked out fine. Putting out 150 amps @ 11 to 12 volts. Problem must be in the lead wire. Will check it out tomorrow. Gregg
