Does anyone know the procedure for changing out the transmission filter on a 95 Discovery. My Hayes manual won't go into detail, (says take it to a dealer) I live on an island in Alaska, nearest dealer is Seattle. At any rate, it appears that I remove the cross member but do I need to start dismantaling some exhaust to get to it? Does anyone have any suggestions or tips or is a dealer a must. Thank you in advance

Hey, Streling I don't have a manual that tells it either, but if you have the kit it should give you some insite as to what is replaced and or cleaned. as for the extent of what to take aprt to get to it should be straight forward, but then again I'm new here and have not done one on a d1.

what island do you live on in Alaska? my wifes from Dilingham lived there about 15 years before here escape.

sorry wasn't much help but saw the Alaska post and had to reply. I'm sure you'll get some good answers on this site.

Cheers, Andy

Sterling,

As long as the 30k service was done on the truck, (which includes changing the trans oil filter) you don't need to do it again. I know, the owners manuals say you have to do it at 60k but Land Rover issued a service bulletin that indicated it only has to be done once. You can simply drain the trans fluid and refill it through the dipstick filler hole. It should take around 4 quarts because all the oil does not drain out, a lot is left in the torque converter.

If you still feel you want to do it, you need to disconnect the exhaust pipe from the y pipe and loosen/remove the y pipe from the exhaust manifold. You should then have enough clearance to remove the chassis crossmember and drop the pan (drain oil first).

At that point, changing the filter is a straightforward procedure.

You will also need a 27mm Tork socket for the filter bolt removal though most of the time a 25mm will work also.

Hello Sterling.

I'm up here in Fairbanks. The weather is doing a number on my Disco. I don't have any advice on your problem, but it's good to hear from an Alaskan. We should hit the trails together sometime.

John

Thank you all for the input. John I'd love to hit the trails in Fairbanks, unfortunately we are moving to Arizona next month, but it's a good thing, I use to live in Fbks years ago and know how harsh the winters can be, burrr...!
Sergie, thank you very much for the tech article, it was a great help, also thanks to Jamie, Oliver and Andy for your help as well. A great bunch of guys on this site! Cheers
