Just picked up an '96 Disco with AT yesterday. Driving home I noticed a slight whinning, what I first assumed to be, at acceleration. But as I would decelerate, foot off the gas, I would still hear this noise. It seemed to be coming from the front end. Checked out the owners manual about the locking diff, saw that maybe it had been engaged and not then not reversed to shut it off properly. Tried that, and it seemed to lessen the sound of the noise but it's still there.
Considering it is when the truck is actually moving I'm assuming it's possibly something in the diff is still not fully unlocked? Any help would be great. I can do all the work myself, without question...

IF this is your first disco you may be getting use to a normal driveline whine in the tfer case. All of them have it some louder than others.

Yeah it is my first. So this may be a normal whine? Should it be anything I should be concerned about if it is?

It's normal, I have it too on my '96.

You're just hearing the various gears and cogs in the driveline spinning up and down. Just tell your friends the noise they hear are the twin-turbos spinning up.

Chris, remember, you are now sitting next to the transmission. That's the big hump to your right. It'll be louder than other cars where it's a lot lower in the chassis.

Chris,
Don't worry. My '96 does the same thing. The will let you know when it needs attention via the warning lights and OBD codes. Also, don't use the word . For some reason is a banned word on this board. Good luck with your Disco and the .

check the wheel bearings, makes sure cvs and diff have oil as well as the T-case has oil in it.
