I know this is a dumb question, but I keep forgetting to ask someone.

When I have my D2 in low (transfer gear box) and go down short distances on steep terrain, my truck makes LOTS of noise moaning and groaning. It gets REALLY LOUD when I am making sharp turns while descending at the same time and my wheels/axels are articulating in different positions (or whatever the proper term for that is).

Also, in these situations, my brakes are not as sensitive as they are on daily driving. Brake pedal must be depressed further than daily driving and the braking action seems to have more forceful umpf when they begin to brake. I'm accustomed to carrying alot of weight, I'm guessing that the added weight my may account for some of that?

I don't think there is anything wrong with my truck since it only makes all this racket when it is being stressed. It really grumbles alot if I have to do a bit of backing up and driving forward again while facing somewhat downward and sideways to get my truck in the right position before I descend all the way. Mind you, I'm talking about descending short distances, not mountains. I'd just like to know if this is normal. I keep forgetting to ask because there is never anyone around when this happens. Experienced this again yesterday, got scared (as usual) for a few seconds, and made myself a note so I would finally remember to ask about this.

Do your discos make all this noise too? Do you know what all the noise is about?

Whining in low range is normal. When descending hills, it is louder b/c it is in low gear and thus you are experiencing engine braking (the wheels encountering resistance from the t-case and transmission) The shifts are also pretty noisy and jerky, especially down shifts.

Jamie, your car will make lots of noise offroad. You are twisting things, stressing things, hitting mud/rocks/sticks, etc... Your undercarriage is also much closer to the ground, so the noises bounce upwards more. Think about when it rains... isn't it much louder inside?
There is also much more stress on all the components. You are at a much lower speed, making more jerky movements, so any play in anything will be magnified.
It's normal.
