I was somewhere I shouldn't have been yesterday. The mudpit didn't look too bad, but was. As soon as my front end got in it just dropped. Water was about 1/4 way up the hood, truck was at a pretty decent angle. The back tires were still dry. Well, the engine died immediately and I turned the key off. Water began to come in the doors, which scared the shit out of my friend with me. (We're both submarine officers and flooding is not something we like to see.) Well, embarassingly I was pulled out by my other buddy in his jeep. I popped the hood and opened up the filter box. The air filter was soaked and muddy and there was standing water in the bottom of the box. I pulled all the intake hoses out, there was some water in them but pretty much all in those air traps or whatever they are. There were maybe a few drops of water in the actual intake itself. I blew it all dry and cleaned it. I then pulled a spark plug to check for water and didn't find any at all. After being pretty sure I didn't suck water into the engine I went to start it. I heard a clunk as the engine started turning over. Obviously I stopped right away. Well, I had a friend go turn it over so I could see where it was coming from. It was the starter, the starter not engaing the flywheel. The clunk was the lower starter mount shearing. I didn't know this until I went and looked at it again today.

So what would cause the starter mount to shear? I'm guessing the starter couldn't turn and the torque had to go somewhere. But now my question is why wouldn't the starter turn? My opinions are, something like rock or mud got into the bell housing and wouldn't allow the starter to turn, or the engine is hydraulically locked. I don't think the engine is locked because we got the starter to engage a few times and the engine turned over but the starter slipped off the flywheel before the engine could actually start. I had it towed to the dealer, hopefully they'll have time tomorrow to look at it.
