Mine is seized!!
I thought my alterntaor was going, which was made very evident when i tried to use my winch yesterday. However, when i came home from a short trip today, i found that my power steering was kaput. i found my belt dislodged and the pulley right below was seized and had a few bearings "showing".
What is this thing called, how much are they, and how long will it take for me to change up?
I will get this changed and then check my alternator.
luckily i had a good battery!!

It's called an idler and should take all of 15 min to change out. Sorry I don't know what they cost new at the dealer but I would expect about 50 bucks. Could possibly cross referance the bearing number at Napa and get away cheaper.

I'm sure someone will shime in with a part# and price. If you can wait a day or two, order from Discount rovers, Rover Club House or Rover's North.

Yep, idler pulley is what you need. I bought mine from the dealership as I was about 5 miles from them when mine seized up. I'm thinking that I paid around $200 U.S. funds. Easy to change out if you're not in a downpour on the side of the interstate with hardly any of the correct tools:-) If you would be content with used parts, get ahold of Robert at www.roverlandparts.com and he'll hook you up.

Scroll to the bottom of this page:

There's a picture... it tells you what everything is.

Secondly, the idler pulley is not below the alternator on a DII. (Your profile does not say what you drive.) The tensioner pulley (like you said) is. You cannot buy just the pulley, you have to buy the whole tensioner. Still, it is less than $100US from Land Rover (I called).

If it is the idler pulley (which is below the tensioner pulley, which is below the alternator), then you are in luck--it's about $25US (I asked about this too when I called).

But, again, I do not know if you have a DII...

Didn't you notice that smell of burning rubber? Maybe it's just me, but everytime I shut-down the pig, I walk by the hood and take a sniff.
Last week, I smelled rubber, opened the hood, idler bearing seized. $10 at NAPA, in fact, guy at NAPA removed my bearing to compare, and then drove the new bearing back in the pulley for me... Cool! Oh yes, serp belt was toast as well.
Only took a short trip when I noticed that smell but it does not take much to cook the belt.
Go to NAPA, DIY.
