When I leave for work in the morning and get on the interstate my Disco starts doing funny things. When I normally reach about 65-70 mph its starts to shutter and miss like a fouled plug. Runs really rough when giving gas. When I decrease my speed to 55 mph it stops and I runs fine the rest of the day even at higher speeds. Once the speed decreases to 55 I can speed back up again with no missing. Any thoughts??? |

VSS - Variable Speed Sensor. Probably one of the most common faults on a Disco. |

Jacob, it could also be your fuel filter. Everyone has an opinion of what causes this issue, and everyone seems to have fixed it in different ways. I know when mine did that I changed nothing but the fuel filter, that was 20k ago. |

Jacob, I had the same symptons plus my gas mileage had dropped from 250 miles per full tank to 200 miles. I installed a new TPS (throttle position sensor) and it fixed the problem. I'm back to 250-270 miles per full tank and no more hesitation. Also, my stepper motor was loose (one of the screws), tightened it up and voila...almost like new. Just my experience. |

O.K., I'll ask for Jacob. Where is the VSS and the TPS? The stepper motor is at the top-rear of the intake plenum...has those wire thingies hangin' out. |

Eric, my 96 has the TPS and Stepper Motor in the front of the plenum (right above the driver side valve cover). I think the Stepper Motor is located in the back of the plenum on the older models (distributor). |

I get around 315 miles per tank on the highway. No significant fuel problems. One i went on a trip and it spuddered and spat like something crazy. I put a used vss on it and it doesnt do that anymore just the more calm sputtering and spatting. Its strange though. I generally does it every day, when i get on the interstate in the morning and get up to about 70-75mph. I let off the throttle, let it coast back to 55 and it then runs as if nothing happens ( as soon as it hits 55) |

Don't let the SPEED drop below 55...you may have to head to the airoprt to circle the runway until we figure something out! Sorry... your post reminded me of a movie. |
