Yesterday my wife was leaving swimming lessons with my daughter when our 1996 Disco just stopped running as soon as she pulled out of the parking lot. I went to pick her up and tried starting it. It would fire up, but then immediately die. If you tried to give it gas, it would die. Does anyone have any ideas where to start?

I would start with Fuel Pump/Fuel Pressure Regulator....that is if there is gas in the tank. |

Sounds like a broken fuel pump to me. Try taking out the carpet in your trunk, and upon start-up listen closely and you should be able to hear the fuel pump whine. I wish I could describe the sound better, but if you can't hear anything there's a good chance it's busted. |

once you just turn the key so the radio and stuff comes on you should hear the pump prime up. if you dont hear this it could be the problem. somewtimes the pump is working but weak. replaceing the fuel filter with a new one will increase flow/pressure just enough that it will allow the truck to run again for few hours/days or weeks depending on how spent the onld pump is. i cant remember the disco so well but make sure there are no fuses or anything blown. and for the hell of it rest the inertia sensor under the hood, along the firewall on the passenger side. ahh, i keep forgetting there is a port on the fuel rail where you can screew on a fuel pressure guage and get a reading. you can buy this guage for ~$30 or sometimes rent it from a autoparts store. Your reading on Prime should go up to 32psi i think and once running be near 37psi. if it is below 29psi the truck starts to run like shit. rd |

If this is a SoCal Rover (or started life as one), there were some dealers that put in an aftermarket theft deterrent system, which worked by disabling the fuel pump, but they supply a bit of fuel on startup, so the engine will start and run for a few seconds then die, repeat ad infinatum. When the theft deterrent system dies, it usually dies in the "enabled" position, causing the symptons you described. You might try to check if you have a fuel pump disabler somewhere under your dash. |

I thought it might be the fuel pump also, but I put a new one in maybe 1-2 years ago. Then again, it's British. |

Try this.. Pull the fuel pump fuse under the hood on the passenger side. Turn the ignition as if you were starting the truck. Go back and put the fuse in. Then try starting the truck. |

I had the same thing happen to my 96 in Jan of this year. I bought a new fuel pump and the truck still would not start. I checked all the relays and nada. It turned out all I had to do was reset the inertia switch!! So try that before you go replacing parts. |
