Just to let everyone know. The site is going to be down for a few days here very shortly. Jeff at Alexandria Internet has done us a big favor in keeping costs low for the past few years but is now forced to raise our rates. Bottom line is that we simply cannot afford to pay for the kind of bandwith this site uses. We have found something that looks like it will fit the bill for us and will be switching over to it. There will however be a period of black out while I rebuild the server and try to implement some more stream line technology on it. We will have a temp page up shortly so there is no need to send 5 thousand mails asking whats going on.....

Any chance that you could make the archive available by CD? Way too much info to lose access to?

It will come back just as it left off. Just not sure of the time frame. We certainly arent going to go to the pains of burning CDs when we dont really get enough support from the site now to keep it running in any one place for an extended period...

That's just too bad. There are 2,300+ registered users on this site, and 90% of them contribute nothing. If everyone supported the site a little bit, we would not be in this situation in the first place.

Well, Axel, just tell us to pony up money :-)
I mean heck - everyone can cough up 5$, and if at least 100 people do it, i guess it would pay for site for a bit.

How much traffic discoweb gets anyway? Rounded up by gig?

Axel & Kyle, just out of curiosity why not post a fund meter on the main page of Disco web. This could indicate how much money is needed in order to pay the bills. I am sure that people on Disco web including myself would be willing to help out to ensure that we do not run into this type of issue.

The first thing I did when I joined Discoweb was buy some stickers and a t-shirt to help out. I will admit I do not own any of the videos, but I don't get much time in front of the TV to watch anything anyhow. But if the site needs money, then I am sure we would all chip in and help.

Let us know what you need so we can help.

Joey

Unless you wanna totally dedicated server of course. Then its different kettle of fish.

Just start asking for donations and post the "Donate-O-Meter". FreeRepublic.com does it quarterly and meets their goal in a few days.

Well we have always found a home and we have always found a decent price to house it there. Jeff is a fellow Disco owner and he did keep it going for the longest run yet. Most of these "Unlimited" plans however tell us just how limited things really are in about a year . Lets just hope this next ones stays at the same rate for awhile.. For 600 a month we can have it on its own T-1 , Yeah , thats the kind of traffic that is being transfered here.....

I just donated $50 to help with the costs. How many of you are willing to do the same thing? If you all really care about this site and it means so much to you, simply donate money. Don't talk about it, don't whine about it, don't ask for anything in return, just send in money to help keep it going the way it is now.

Everytime this issue comes up, there's always a bunch of people that joke around about how they can't go without D-web. Well, do something about it! Quit talking shit and put up some money. Let's see how many of you really care about this site. After you've donated money, then come back to this thread and tell everybody how much D-web really means to you.

Melissa N,
You need to back up! If you donated money, great! Then you're not the type of person I'm talking about. There's a lot of people here that do a lot of talking but never do anything to really help. If you're not one of those people, let your donation do the talking for you! And by the way, do you really think I would say that I donated money if I didn't? And we are not suggesting any specific amount. Anything helps.

Thanks to all that have donated so far.

Donated the suggested $12.50 from selling my first part on Dweb. Will send more soon. Not a doctor... yet. In medical school so still broke. Ive been visiting the site off and on over the last year. Most other Boards I visit for other hobbies either have a membership fee, provided by a vendor, or supported by advertising vendors. Surely some of the vendors that frequent this site would pay for advertisement space. Have a ad fee for a link to the vendor website on every Dweb page. That might require more upkeep than its worth, dunno. Just a thought. I think it begins with the users tho. Penny up and give something. There's gotta be a way.

Axel, Kyle, and Ho, I hope the $ are starting to flow in, but seriously, I think most (many) of us would have contributed sooner if you had been less subtile about the need for funds. We're here because DiscoWeb fills a need for vital information (and some laughs from time to time). $10, $25, or $50 is quite reasonable, but the students should probably be at the low end of the scale until they graduate and start making the big bucks. Thanks, guys, for a greatly needed resource. Hope you're back online soon. Ray

I think this is wonderful! I was just recently becoming very disenchanted with Discoweb. I love the info and I appreciate everyone’s knowledge and help, but I have become very upset with the way people have been treating each other and putting each other down…even a certain moderator. I was seriously considering not visiting anymore! It really bothers me that much. I hope that when you donate (NOT, IF) you remember that we are all here for the same reason. We all have that bond. There is no reason to fight, make fun of, insult, etc. I hope everyone that is active on this site might take this to heart and just relax a bit on the harsh comments. Save your energy for something positive…like donating! ID # 5W1536878C724394S

Has Disco Web ever tried getting paid advertising for the site. I know that this is how Land Rover Exchange lrx.com stays afloat. They have independent shops and dealers that provide funds. That site is not even a fraction of what D-Web is worth to the Land Rover community not to knock them. But truth be told I would think this would be a great way to supplement costs associated to maintaining the backbone of D-Web.

Barry,

Read through the other "Discoweb going down" thread in the non-tech section and you'll know why Dweb has no advertising. This was a conscience decision that the founders of the site made.

Awww, just thought I'd pop over here and see what was up. Glad we are all coming together. I agree with the moderators that it's worth not having ads on the site. However, I'd be willing to set up some type of withdrawl from my account for say $5 a month just to have access. Don't know how that would work...but I'll think about it!

I think we have all saved a lot of money on here. Between the information gained and the new friends I've made, I feel the love. DISCO LOVE!

Also just remember; Education and Entertainment cost. Your education from here is real cheap. All who use it for education should pay something, and those who use it for entertainment should contribute too. Just for the short time I have been a member; I have had great education and entertainment.

Melissa, you can mix Dot 3 and 4, the only big difference is the boiling point....Dot 3 boils around 400 deg Dry an 280 wet, and Dot 4 boils around 440 wet and 311 dry.

The other difference is price, Dot 3 is cheaper.

You can mix them with little ill effect as long as the system doesn't require Dot 4 and you add Dot 3.

Best thing to do anyway is to flush and replace all brake fluid every couple of years, depending on driving habits.
