When I get on the freeway, as I approach 65mph, my 95 Disco shudders like crazy. I have to bring it down to 50-55mph. When I do this a few times, up and down, it then starts running normally.

Could this be a VSS issue? I had read that it could be from a post in the archives. If it is a VSS issue, how difficult of a job is it to replace? Are there any instructions that I can find on the net on how to replace the VSS?

If its not a VSS issue, what could it be?

I went through this same thing last summer with my 96. I would hit 70 and bam, it would start shuddering, I would shift down to 3rd and it would be OK, but then would loose speed, even if you punched your foot through the floor.

Are you getting any misfire codes??

I asked the same question you did, replaced the VSS (waste of money), and to make a long story short, ended up pulling the heads off and doing a valve job. Wahla, the thing runs like a top (knock on wood). Just make sure when you have the heads cleaned/valve job, make sure they spot face the exhaust guides down closer to the heads.

So, short answer: my guess would be you need a valve job.

Matt,

Can I ask how much a valve job might cost?

'95's don't have the valve problem history that the 96 up (GEMS) motors have. Try tune up, new fuel filter, etc, first. Plug wires can cause similar symptoms.

Check that the rotor in the distributor moves about 10 degrees and springs back. If not the advance mechanism is faulty and the timing will be a mess.

I had VSS issues on my '96 SD. When you say 'Shudders' do you mean as in misfires or does it feel like a balance issue? When my VSS went bad the rig would misfire like crazy- barely holding 55mph at full throttle. This will damage your cats as raw gas is going through them. If you do need to replace the VSS, don't buy one from a LR dealer- they're available much cheaper elsewhere.
I sure hope you don't need a valve job.
Cheers
Paul.

KC,
I think I spent somewhere around $600-$700 in machine shop/gaskets/bolts, and did all of the labor myself. I believe Geoff is correct on the valve issue. In 96 the actual design of the exhaust valve changed.

I had the exact same problem you are describing last year. On the highway the loss of power, shuddering etc. Land Rover dealer said I needed a valve job(go figure-every problem I've had, and there has been plenty ,the first words out the service manager's mouth is valve job). After reading this site and researching the issue I decided to try replacing the vss. I did the swap in about 10 minutes with the help of a mechanic who knew absolutely nothing about Land Rovers. The problem has been gone for about a year now. Do yourself a favor and try an original parts vss before even contemplating the valve job.
