The starter on my 95 disco went out today and I called around looking for parts. Most places said they had remanufactured starters for about $200. Is replacing the starter on a 95 hard or is it more sensible to pay a mechanic. Thanks for any input as always.

Jansen not the most easy starter to replace but with a little time it can be done. The hard part is getting to the top bolt you have to come in from the front over the axle with a long extension on your wrench. You need an allen socket not sure the size but I am sure someone will come in and say. But the first thing to do is disconect your battery, then take off the heat shield that is clipped onto the starter it just pulls off. The go after the bolts hit the top first. One thing to look into is having your starter rebuilt I had mine done two years ago for like 100.00.

Jansen,

I just had my starter go and replaced it with one from www.britishstarter.com It's a brand new, high torque, gear reduction starter. Price is very reasonable and the owner of the site is super. Another option is Mean Green, also very good. Good Luck, and just for the record, I have no relation to british starter

8mm is the size of the allen bolt.

Jansen, it can be a tough job if you don't have access to a garage, lift and tools. We tried to do it ourselves, but couldn't get it off. Ended up taking my local garage about 2 hours to replace b/c the bolts were seized with mud/rust. I know some guys on here have done it, I posted when mine went out, but if you can get it done fairly cheap by a local shop, I'd vote for that!

Also, I bought a reman. one through that garage and spent a fortune, but it was two days before Christmas and a 3000 mile trip. Definitely shop around!

Good luck!

I appreciate all the advice. Since i dont have access to lifts and tools I took it into a local starter shop. Guy said it would be 95 to rebuild it and about $80 for labor. Not too bad of a deal considering any autopart store would want $200 just for a remanufactured starter not including installation.

I seem to be a little late but I crawled under my 95 with it on its wheels in a gravel drive and cut an 8mm allen wrench and stuck it into an 8mm socket to get the bolts out and in. I went new because I plan to keep it mucho long time. Had plenty of problems with rebuilt alternators then bought that new also.
