I'm a newbie to this board (and a new owner of a 2001 Discovery II SD7). My Disco currently does not have a running board, and I'm thinking of getting one for ease of access for my children. Now, I've looked at the genuine LR running boards and other after-market products like ARB. Is there difference in quality? Also, is the mud flap that is built into the LR product there for a reason? Most of the after-market products does not seem to have built-in mud flaps, and I'm trying to figure out whether or not the mud flaps are there to serve a purpose. Thanks in advance for your wisdom. |

Edward, you may not get much of a response to this thread as most folks on this board (and I'd venture to guess about 95%) take things like running boards off their trucks for off-roading...which means, you may be able to find a used set from someone on here. This is a very off-road orientated crowd. I can't answer either as I have no running boards and my mud-flaps aren't built-in but thought I'd shed some light if you don't get the response you're hoping for. Try getting some used ones off someone here. |

Ed, The mud flaps keep your truck cleaner. My children are also the only reason I have the Genuine running boards on my truck. My children seem pleased with the performance of the Genuine running boards. - Str0ud |

ed the type of running boards is up to your personal taste! what ever ones you like are the ones to get. if you do in tend to use the rover off road at all then i wolud sugest a rock slider type. this will help to protect areas of the body work from ground contact. as for the mud flap. this will stop debris from flying off the tyres. they help to catch this and collect mud or rocks. diverting it away from the paint work and cars behind you. oh ya welcome to the board! |

Go with the ARB. They can be used for running boards and they are strong enough to use off-road. I have some friends who swear by them. I noticed a set, CHEAP on this boards classifieds. |

I have ARB on mine. I worry about them when off road but so far so good. Easier for my parents to get in and out. Only thing I don't like about them is the alumimum tread gets slippery when wet. |

I think the genuine ones are very nice, and they have a very wide foot pad for getting in. They are the only running boards I have seen children use sucessfully. Granted, I don't think I've ever seen the ARBs in person. The nerf bar/stainless types don't work for helping people to get in. |

You will trash the running boards if you take them off-road. Rovertym makes a nice slider with a nerf step that is wide enough to use as a step. My 4 year old can easily get in and out with them. http://www.rovertym.com/sliders.htm |
