can anyone tell me how much i should extend the trailing arms to help 255/85 fit better? ive got a 3 door, ive heard that if i extend the trailing arms it will help it clear the front edge of the guard. if i do this do i need to extend the a arm, and can i just space the mounting bracket out or do i actually have to lengthen the arm itself? |

darren, i recently set up a disco, much like you are considering. on this truck i used a Rte rear link and spaced it using the spacers that Steve supplies with the links. the problems that arise when spacing out your lower links is that it drops your rear pinion consequently creating vibes. the A-arm extension at this point will do two things for you; first it will relieve the binding on the A-link ball joint, secondly it will raise your pinion back up and you can use the lower link spacers to fine tune your pinion angle. this was a 99' D1 so the rear drive shaft was u-jointed (no rotoflex) so i kept the pinion as flat as i could before the u-joints started to bind at full droop. with a CV/double cardin rear drive shaft you would want to point the pinion straight at the transfer case. in hindsite, i would have had the A-arm extension drilled 1/4" longer than stock and not 1/2" like i did. at 1/2" the axle moves back further than you actually need, 1/4" would seem to be about right. if you go to far back with the spacers the spring perches start to rotate introducing other issues. in the end i did no rear door cutting and very little rear quarter cutting. total spacing was 1/2" longer on the A-arm extension and 7/8" on the rear links. also a cv rear shaft will help alot with over all setup and spacing. (that will be next for this truck, but that will be when the money tree blooms again) good luck marc |
