OK, this is my second thread, and thanks to those that responded my earlier thread regarding running board recommendations.

My Disco came with the factory roof rack, and I need some advice on what type of ski rack to get. Should I get a LR cross bar and attach ski rack to the cross bar? Is it strong enough to carry 4 pairs of skis? I saw a few Discos in my area with Thule or Yakima racks that seems to be attached via the rain gutter. I also saw a Disco with a Yakima cross bars that were attached to the LR factory rack. I also saw those hitch mounted ones, but not so crazy about them. Are there any that mounts to the spare tire so that I can open the rear door with the skis attached?

Again, your sharing of your wisdom will be greatly appreciated.

In my opinion a Thule rack that attaches to the factory roof rails, not utilizing the factory cross bars is a nice, clean setup.

Hitch mount is the way to go. I have Yak lowriders on my factory rails & it's a pain in the ass to access. Yak makes a spare mount but i'd stay away from mounting anything else on the door, hinges seem to be a little weak. I tried to fit my raingutter mounts & they won't work (even with the highrise blocks)

(1) Remove factory roof rails (see Blue's tech article for more)

(2) Buy and install Thule towers and load bars, mounting to rain gutters

(3) Enjoy a clean appearance, and take advantage of ability to later add basket / bike mounts / etc. up to the structural limits of the gutters (vs. about 50 pounds on factory crossbars)

(4) Profit :-)

reguardless of what brand you use (Thule or Yakima) avoid putting a ski rack on your factory cross bars. My brother's friend had 4 snowboards attached to the factory crossbars of his Disco in Denver and some a-holes took the whole thing, snowboards, rack, crossbars. I work in an outdoor retail store that sells Yakima, so I'm partial to their stuff over Thule, but I do have a Thule Ski rack I bought before I got involved with the Yakima stuff, I like the Thule just fine. If you go with a gutter mount system, Go wtih the Thule, they fit the Discovery alot better, i.e. they dont rub/touch the side of the roof. Yakima ski carriers are nice though since they have larger buttons to open the rack with if you have gloves on. something to concider. Also Yakima makes a hitch mounted swing away carrier, that you can carry bikes, or skis on. Atlantic British has them I think.

I did Thule (fairing -wide) as well, simple install too. Thule has their own number and website however you can not buy from them direct but from someone like LLBEAN (only an example, there are a million retailers that carry Thule). I think I bought extra parts from Thule's website for my bike rack.. the car wash ate it. Thus far I have been really pleased with Thule. Best, Mel

Speaking of things Thule and Yakima, you can get good deals on used towers, loadbars, etc. on EBay....

Yakima 48" crossbars with lowrider towers are very strong, then you can fit either the powderhound or lift ticket ski mount.
The picture is of my rack which has the older verison of the lowriders called the crosstop towers. The lowriders put the bars slightly lower.

Go w/ thule cross bars and whatever components you want. If you are mainly going to use it for skis, thule bars mounted to factory rails will be fine. For a D2, the bar set you need is 754xt. Then go with a pair of the ski racks that slide outward - not necessary on a car but helps alot with the height of the disco.
