Gears at the diff come at a sacrifice of strength.

Which kit are you looking at?

this is what i was thinking the rover is geared too tall right now. 235 tyres and lift. so i want to lower the gearing for a better low range and better high way crusing. so i was going to lower the gearing in the dif add a locker and upgrade to 24 spline half shafts. i was thinking of the lowest gears possible in the pods. so then i guess this would effect the highway performance. so i would think that an overdrive will bring this back. but i am not sure if they make an electric one to fit on the auto transmission.
now that i think about this, i think i have been thinking too much? hum now what to do? b

I've got 255's (33") and 4.11 gears and it works well all around. My D1 runs great on trails and just as good at 70mph down the interstate with the overdrive. It sounds like you have a rrc or older D1 because of the 24 spline upgrade so the engine size might matter on the gears you select. I feel like I could have went with 4.7 gears (even with a 4.0) because I don't do a lot of highway driving. Tell us more about your set up and I'm sure others will give you their opinions.

Man, you just complained about how your mileage sucks and you want to drop in lower gears? :-)

If you have a ZF in the truck it won't work. This was talked about a long time ago. Save your money and drop in a set of 4.10's. They will improve your vehicle's drivability both on and off the road. Hope this helps.
