After holiday for 2 weeks during which 98 Disco sat at Dorval airport in extremely cold conditions(-40) noticed sqeaking from power steering. Had truck for about 2.5 and never have had to top up power steering fluid except at scheduled maintenance. Topped it up and one week later it's needing filling again. I assume there is a leak. What should I be prepared for at the dealer when I take it in. Is this generally a simple fix.

Jordan: Mine too 1998. It is holding fluid though(since I added Lucas Power Steering Fluid). The leak appears to be coming from under the pressed clamp on the smaller hose ... I was just going to change out the clamp but I think I will just replace the hose instead ? Any thoughts?? I do not want to have to go to the dealer though..

Pull the hoses, clean everything, reinstall hoses with screw type hose clamps. The factory crimp on style clamps always leak.
The next thing to leak will be the input shaft seal of the box!

Peace.

Throw some cardboard down and make a mess! That's the fun part.
You shouldn't have to remove anything but the hoses. The supply hose to the pump is a pain to get to, but it can be accessed with out removing the pump. I use long nosed needle nose pliers to pry open the factory clamp, then I pull the hose off by reaching under the pump. Once you have the hose off and cleaned, you can slip on the new clamp and refit the hose to the pump. Make sure you position the clamp so you can tighten it with a nut driver(or socket) from the front.
The hoses @ the reservoir are easy enough, so no explination needed there.
The return hose from the PS box to the reservoir sometimes leaks too. I use a cutting wheel to carefully cut the clamp off without damaging the hose, pry off the remains and install a new clamp.
By the time you're done, you will be covered to your elbows in grime; but your truck will stop marking its territory everytime you park.

Good luck!

PS. I pressure wash the hoses, reservoir, and box(top and bottom) when I finish, then recheck for leaks.

Melissa,
According to the shop manual you need to remove the fan blades and viscous coupling and remove the pulley on the power steering pump.

I just replaced the clutch fan(which is one with the blades) ..That thing was so hard to get off the water pump!! AHHH!! I am actually leaking more towards the top of the reservoir anyway.. The smaller of the two hoses. I just wanted to replace with the screw type clamps anyway..I guess I better read the manuel and go from there !! I have a feeling this could be a weekend project!! Thanks Justin and Shane

It shouldn't take you the whole weekend. You can almost always find a way to get to the hoses without pulling alot of things off.

Sorry about the "shouldn't have to remove anything but the hoses." I was thinking of PS components. Shane was right about the fan. I've never had to pull of the clutch though.

Word.

Managed to clean all the power steering components on Saturday afternoon (I have no social life.. I am a SLAVE to my rover)..Replaced both the clamps under the reservoir(there are two hoses)..thus far the leak is gone. And the reservoir is full( after adding LUCAS) and is holding fluid. But there is still some ""black sludge"" ?? Anybody have any clue what this could be ??

Melissa,

It sounds like you need to go out and have some fun.
