Hey all. Was fixing my window ecu and noticed two plugs that seem to fit each other that were laying separate behind my glove box. One side was actually taped over, so not like it just came undone. Any idea what they are for? Picture attached:

by the way, this is a 95 DI. No power seats, no rear a/c, and no front fog lights, if that makes a difference.

humm,

I would not have been able to resist the impulse to put them together the moment I saw them like that.

i thought and felt the same thing. but my impulse was tempered by what i know lucas can do.

if you'll notice, the connector on the right has three leads running into it, but only one metal connecter sleeve in the holes. and the connector on the left has only one wire going to it, and this matches the single sleeve on the other connector. guess need to run meter on it and see if i get voltage.

Does your cruise work?

The one box looks like a cruise ECU.

it doesn't, but that's because of hose cracks, and my laziness (it did for first 3 years, so i know it isn't that connection). this actually comes out of a wiring loom, that disappears down into the truck, through the firewall i believe.

That could be the "data link connector" used to reset/read check engine codes......Is your Check engine light on?

Those connectors power up the secret gremlin compartment under your passenger seat. When you connect them it opens a small door and adds water so they multiply.

LOL, I would have the same impulse and you guys. “Wow…I should connect those wires…that would be cool...yes...then my truck would run better...better mileage...better performance...super reliability...yes...that’s the ticket”.
After connecting them and releasing the gremlins from a secret Lucas compartment under the passenger seat I’d wonder what I was thinking.

Your engine is equipped with a 14CUX fuel injection system. That is the conection to pulg in your hand held tester (HHT) to get the codes. You can clear them with that conector too.

no, no check engine light. and that would be weird if it was the data link as it plugs into each other?

truck is running great, that's why didn't want to do something that might upset the boat in anyway. ahh, joys of rover ownership. 4 years, 60k+ miles, and still have surprises every day.

I think it's some way of getting you into he dealer for service. They probably want you to hook them together so it blows some insanely complicated placebo gadget that does absolutely nothing. Sort of a punishment for working on your own vehicle instead of getting dealer to fix it. The way Land Rover is going these days I wouldnt put it past them :-) I found 2 similar wires under my 93 Range Rover, but I've left 'em alone for now. I'm heading out to check my disabled 96 Disco right now. My curiosity has been peaked. I'll report my findings(if any) when I return.

hey flyor, thanks for the info. why would there be two plugs and they be able to be plugged into each other? shouldn't there just be one plug that you would connect a reader to?

Here's more info:

Whats weird is that normally these plugs are supposed to be connected all the time..At least on my 95RRC they are.

Colin,
96 has a GEMS system which you can read out with the TestBook rather than the HHT. A different conector.
Robbie,
you can plug them together and leave them. You can clear fault codes by a sequence of pluging, unpluging, turning key on, turning key off and waiting for the relay to click and so on. As Sven says read Robinsons article.

(dammit, was really hoping it was an electric locker connector or ejection seat or something cool).
