now that it's one year after a complete sex change of my '95 disco (new 4.6 w/cam, ome shocks/springs, blah, blah, blah) i am once again bored and swimming in all this free cash mr. bush has so kindly thrown at me i find myself yearning for even shittier gas mileage hence my decision to ditch the fuel injection and bolt on a hi-rise manifold and carburetor. i've been looking at edelbrock but thought i'd consult the lot of you who seem to know just about everything about these pressing matters. also, where can i find the throttle and kickdown linkage?

one option

I would get the duel plane offy so you dont loose to much torque but still get the power you seek.

I will be going this way some day when I rebuild my 3.9 and simplify old lucas out of the truck.

I would call Bill Rhodes (505) 471-3888 he has a european repair shop in Santa Fe, he was telling me it could be done, but I kind of like EFI myself.

You can do it a few ways either get an early Rangie carb manifold and run 2 x 2in SU carbs, or machine off the top of the mainfold and weld on an adaptor plate is was a common way to change the carbs on 70's Rangies in OZ. You can buy a 4 barrell mainfold of the shelf if you want. A lot of blokes seem to run Rotchester Quad jets as Hollys trend to flood bad off road. I take it your state laws are ok with this.

Rob,

I can't help but wonder why you'd want to lose the EFI and go to a carb. I just can't think of any good justification for it, other than for the sake of tinkering.

nate,

i'm not sure i can justify it either. not yet anyway. it's just that i've had my share of probs with efi and i'm thinking it would be nice to make them all go away. call it low-tech syndrome. def appreciate the feedback. would like to hear more opinions.

L/R sells defenders with carburetors in South America, so whow about (gasp!) L/R ?...although I don't know if they make carb trucks with auto trans.

Main reason they do this os to simplify repairs

Early English Discos had carbs and auto's they ran 2 x 1 3/4 in CD Strombergs just like early Range Rovers, none of these ever made to OZ due emmision laws. We never got Discos here till they were injected in the early 90 s but there are heaps of early carby type Rangies here if want a factory manifold and carb set up. The 70-80s Rangies ran different autos however. They either had a Torgue Flight or a Borg warner not a ZF.

you can run a carb with a 4HP22 all day long with no problems. they only use mechanicals for kick down and shift modulation. the 4HP24 uses electronics.

for a real simple truck that is easy to water proof a carb has alot of advantages.

plus EFI and the fuel pumps associated with it take alot of power and that complicates water proofing more because the hevier the load on the alternator when it is drenched in mud and water the shorter overall life it will see.

simple is just better in most respects on off-road trucks

I am currently doing a carb conversion on a 94 disco 3.9 engine. I had an older engine (77) and needed replacement so I am currently getting minor connections done. I am running a single carb intake and have a 4brl edelbrock carb. Will possibly change out to a holley if this one works shitty. I also have the twin stromberg intake and carbs that I don't use.
