I seem to recall reading here that it's wise to rotate in the spare, but after my last service rotation & balance, the dealer said it was a bad idea - the spare should always be without the slightest doubt, 100% perfect. I see the logic: what if after rotating out one of the four to a spare it had a small leak you weren't aware of...?
What do you all do?

i rotate with the spare to get even wear on all 5. i dont have a set schedule like some people on this board do though. Rotating the spare is good if your going to get a different size tire after this set. this way your 5 tires last a bit longer then just the 4 would, and if your plus sizing, you will need a new spare anyways. although you could probaly sell a spare with 0 miles on it easily. Its all personal preference and what you plan on doing with your truck. if you plan on keeping the same size tires, then maybe only rotating 4 would be better.

I would rotate all 5... I'll see if i can find the website that recommends it and why. It gives a really good description. The previous owner didn't rotate his -- still bugs me, as the spare is starting to dry rot and has 0 miles on it. And is a completely different brand/style than my other 4

This one has info on making sure your tires match to avoid driveline wear-- (specifically see the "rotating" section)

And this is a short article on general rotation--

I rotate the spare in so all the tires get even wear. Also helps when the tires get worn out, I won't be stuck with one new tire that I may or may not go with again and have to try to sell.

Also when I eventually get the rear locked up, all the tires will be pretty evenly worn in the event I need to use the spare.

Here's a link with some rotation patterns for different vehicles. One tip... If you bring it to a shop for 5 tire rotation, it may help if you use chalk and mark the new position of the tires so the techs don't confuse them (RF 35psi, LR45 psi, spare 45 psi, ect.) Maybe torque value for the nuts as well.

I get it now... Guess it would'nt look too good to rotate a steel spare in with the alloys :-)

Get yourself a wheel to match the other four and rotate it with the rest. It looks better on the back of the rig than the black OE spare, too!

Even better. If you off-road, you need a second spare. Now you can rotate 6 wheels and tires.

It is not necessary to rotate the wheels of the dico permanent traction, the rest of variations are possible

"Must all be D2 folks"

My 98 D1 has an alloy spare :-) Perhaps an option, as it is an LE...

Thats another reason I can't figure out why the prev. owner didnt rotate it in...<sigh>
