howdy yall,
My 96 disco (106k)is having problems (weird huh..??). First of all it has, in the last 15k, developed the dreaded "CLUNK" when moving the selector from d to r and r to d and so on... I know this is more than likely the spline failure. However it has also developed hard shifting, especially going into 4th gear and especially when you lay the pedal down. And finally it has developed a shaking around 55-65 and sometimes above or below and sometimes on uphills (hard to narrow it down. I have ruled out any fault codes (using t4), only problem is..I dont know the first thing about drive trains! I replaced recently: tires, trans flush and filter, fluid in axles (transfer case and swivel housing fluid pending). The new tires sewemed to lessen the effect (probably cuz of softer tire though). There is 3/4" play in rear drive shaft, 1cm in front one. What i am trying to figure out is if it is one ore multiple causes..? Would the u joint cause all of this? Could the drive shaft being out of balance cause all of this? I have checked steering damper and tie rods and all that other crap for play and found none, just the drive shaft. As needy as it is I love my baby, and when shes down Im down with her! Any help would be greatly appreciated!

P.S. Donation to site pending as this site is an extremely valuable tool!

Could very well be the U-Joints. When they go bad, the first thing you will feel is the clunk going in and out of gear....

If they fail well driving, you will have an nice chunk of change get sucked out of you wallet.

i thought the clunk into reverse was one of D1's automatic charms? Mine's always done it, this is my current 97 4.0 and my 96 3.9. Should i replace the U joints? How big of a chunk out of my wallet?

Cheers

Jack

Here is the Canadian price breakdown for my job that I just had done on Thursday:

U-joints $42.48 each x 2
Labour $70.20 to do both

Total including my taxes was $191.66. Land Rover wanted $118.00 per u-joint and I heard the Land Rover u-joints are the weakest. This job was cheap in my opinion considering the benefits and the safety.

i know that this is not the cue to broken parts but try lucas oil additives. this stuff seems to work. i used it on the power steering. used it on the transmission and both are working smooth. the hard shifts are gone. i added two bottles to the transmission.
also when was the last time the fluids where changed. change them it you can not remember when then drain and replace. dont forget todrain the torque converter. now you can up grade to synthetic if you want, or add it what is called for. and dont forget lucas additives!

Trans fluid has been drained and refilled 3x in last month as to get the fluid out of the torque converter. Also changed trans filter. Niether seemed to help at all. Dont know much about drive trains but it seems to me that if there is 3/4" slack in rear drive shaft, then the trans is spinning everything, that rear drive shaft spins fast until it moves through the freeplay then catches abruptly and causes the "hard shift". My question is, is something in the u-joint causing this slack? Is something in the rear axle causing the slack? Like I said, I barely know what a drive shaft is! All I know for sure is taht it is not fluid related.
