this is a question that is not even for rovers but for a ford super duty rear differintal. hope this does not offend anyone here and if so please steer me in the right direction.
my question is that the limited slip rear dif seems to be making skipping and clunking sounds as drive is taken up, and more so upon going around cornnors. what could the problem be. is this an easy fix or is the dif shot. the gear oil just changed. any thoughts

Who changed the oil?? Did they replace it with limited slip gear oil or regular oil? Correct me if I am wrong but without the additives in lim-slip oil it will cause the problems you are describing.

SD's use 90W140 synthetic in the rear diff.
I've seen similar problem with other posi diffs. Add one more posi additive before rebuilding. I've used a number of different brands, and have had great success with the Sta-lube product.

Peace.

tanks a lot i will look into this asap and be adding it in to the rear pod. its worth a try and better then a rebuild. but what is causing this? the clutches or what.

I had a 96 with the full floating 10.25 and a 97 light duty with the semi floating 10.25. In the 97, it acted as you described, even after proper oil changing (with ford additive). I sold the truck last year at 170k with that same problem, never 'broke'. Depending on your tolerance of the chatter, you may be ok just driving it...

Chris, With a lot of the limited slip rear ends, the chatter and clunking is just the action of the limited slip rear functioning properly. Especially around corners when the wheels are turning at different speeds. Take comfort in the fact that these noises verify your rear end is working properly. If you used the proper gear oil and the friction modifier (Ford), no worries. If not drain 4 ounces of fluid from the pumpkin and add the four ounce bottle of Ford Racing Friction Modifier and call it good. It's no rover thats for sure!

The limited slip should not make noise @ all, especially under normal driving.

The noise is from the clutches sticking.

Sta-lube can be found @ Pep-Boys.

And it does not hurt to add more than one posi additive unit. That Sterling is much larger with larger clutches and a greater fluid capacity. One unit gets deluted moreso than when used in an 8.8 or D44.
