What does this get you? Factory manual doesn't mention it, but Hayne's says to do it. Pros and cons?

Blake, This helps to prevent squeeks when applying and releasing brakes.

dont use grease!!!

it will melt off and contaminate your brake pads

go to NAPA and get some SIG (silence is golden) it is a super high temp paste that will not melt and migrate like grease.

Blake, Thom is right the stuff is usually orange in color and is cheap insurance. It sucks to have to take it back apart to fix a squeek.

CRC also makes a anti-squeel spray if you can't find the SIG.

High temp silicone works well also. Thin layer

My instructions with my brake pads and I think the manual recommends anti-sieze on the back.

Copper grease is the stuff to use on brake parts, doesn't melt in the heat

Thom - you _can_ use special grease on the backs of the brake pads; you can get it from M-B dealer as well. As far as how good it is - the anti-squealing effect of the grease is just as poor as that of SIG on LR brakes, in my experience. Nothing gets them silent but using the genuine pads.
