is there a way to wire the lights so they are completely independent of the headlights? and if not, how do i wire them to the headlights?

and what is the best route to get the wires to the binnacle switches that hold the cruise control down by the clock?

thanks again

I'd be interested to here any input on this as well as I just bought the LR auxillary switch for the binnacle in hopes of picking up some hellas in a few days

You sure can. If you have the Hella wiring harness, just leave out the wire that taps into the headlight circuit, and just wire them to the factory switch. You'll have to disconnect the wires from the Hella switch and splice them back into the factory switch. I can't remember which wires go into which pins in the switch, but someone on here does I'm sure. BTW, if you remove the left-side panel in the driver's footwell, you will find a perfect ground for your relay. And from back there (I mean in between the firewall and steering clolumn) you can route the wires behind the steering column into the binnacle. You don't have to take the dash apart, but it makes it a lot easier to tuck them back there if you do.

I would wire them into your parking lights. That way you can not accidentaly leave them on. It is relatively easy to route the wires, just take a flashlight and find small openings where you can thread them through. I would of course pop out the binnacle which you want to run the wires to.

I ran my Hella's on my other disco from the roof rack down beside the windshield, on the drivers side there is a circular rubber piece that feeds through the firewall. All i did was push the wires through with a screwdriver, though be careful if you take the rubber gasket piece out and the positive wire touches the grounded vehicle you're also going to need a fire extinguisher. I used the toggle switch that came with the hella lighting package, i used a larger hella relay to run the others off of. As for my current disco i ran the wires from the rack down the windshield and just ran two extra wires into the integrated bumper fog lights (i replaced with hella 550's and ran 3 wires per light instead of just 2 and hooked the ground and positive up to the lights, now all i have to do is hit my fog light switch next to the cruise control and i've got headlights, bumper fogs, and rack lights going. It is a lot cleaner of a procedure and less time consuming to just run them into the bumper lights if you have them.

Another option is to connect Pin 1 on your LR aux switch to the wire going into Pin 2. Pin 2 receives power only when the dash lights come on.

I wired my worklight this way so I won't accidentally leave the lights on.

I followed this diagram

and it works equally well for any type of light. I only used pin 1 and 4 on the LR switch as I don't really care if the switch is lit. I recommend connecting pin 1 directly to the battery, that way you can use the lights if the key is out. I positioned the relays to the left of the battery and ran the wires through the gromet in the passenger footwel.
