Hey folks newbie here. Have been the proud owner of a 99 Disco 1 for about 6 months now. Just recently started having trouble refueling. When I try to put gas in, the filler tube/neck fills up and the pump of course shuts off. You can't pump slow enough for this not to happen. $40 bucks at the pump can be an all afternoon affair. Can anyone point me in a direction to fix this? There is supposedly an anti-syphon valve in the filler tube somewhere(?) could that be the culprit? If so any clue on how to get it out of there? Thnx Ronn |

This has always been, and will always be, a problem with Discos. Dealers will try like crazy to replace part to no avail. My dealer has tried forever to fix this on both of my Discos and the fix will work for a little while if at all. This is a well known problem and there is really no fix for this, but I have found that it is more dependant on the station than on your Disco. Try a couple stations and just keep in mind which ones you have trouble with. |

I agree with Curt. Sometimes mine is fine and sometimes it is a PITA. Matt |

Try holding the nozzle at a 90degree angle (sideways), that seems to help alot sometimes. Also, I've heard that running the Disco down to empty then trying to fill up is what actually is causing your problem. Try not letting it get down past half a tank and see if that makes it easier on you next time. |

My 99 D1 also has this problem. Look behind the body work between the tank and the gas cap. There are two tubes. The large filler tube/neck and a smaller, coiled breather tube. If you have problems filling up, reach under the body work and disconnect the quick-disconnect fitting on the filler cap side of the small breather tube. Sometimes you can just pull the kinks out of the tube and reconnect, but I just leave mine off while I fill up and reconnect when I am done. Doing this seems to fix the problem for a while. |

My 98 D1 does this occassionally... I've found one gas station that doesn't do it, slightly diff curve of the nozzle. I decided to play around with one of the other station's pumps and i found that if you lift up on the handle sometimes it will work better. Next time you fill up, check the fuel nozzle. You'll notice a small hole near the tip, maybe an 1/8". (its on the side of the nozzle) This is the automatic shutoff. When the tank is full, the fuel level goes just above the hole. The system detects this change and shuts off the pump. This system is integrated with the fuel vapor recovery system implemented in most pumps to prevent unneccessary pollution. -- I work at a gas station, lol. The way the nozzle fits my rover, it allows the handle to sag a little which puts the little hole too close to the side as the fuel fills the tank, it splashes into the hole and the system thinks the tank is full. |

Thnx for the input guys. I'll play with these ideas and see what happens... Otherwise I'm gonna open it up between the tank and filler tube and see what I can see/remove. Matt your idea sounds closest to my trouble. I have worked on the pump angle, adding fuel to a less/more full tank and I can fill it slow enough to fill the tube and so slow the shut off doesn't work and the gas actually overflows. I haven't tried a large variety of pumps, maybe six. I have had one (used twice) which has never been a problem, so I'm still open to other things but it seems like vapor lock or obstruction is my best bet so far. Thnx again to all who responded. Ronn

Oh, i decided to double-check the idea of letting the fuel level get too low. My D1 does the same thing, the pump keeps shutting off. I generally haven't had a problem if I fill up with 1/4 tank left. I do tend to get gas at a half tank, tho -- makes me feel like I'm saving $$ if i drop $15 twice a week instead of $30 once |
