The truck has developed a little rattle on the front driver's side. It rattles while going over small bumps - sounds like a marble in a plastic cup. I'm going to put it up on stands this weekend. What would you guys look for/tighten first. Swivel balls? Tie rods?

thanks - Joe

My 96 does the same thing. I feel a rattling under the flooboards on the driver's side, right under my feet. I took a peek and there's nothing obvious.

I hope it isn't anything serious because I'm driving down to the Great Sand Dunes this weekend...

Damn you Felix.. You make me think about going there again. :-)

Explanation on how to check if it cats (catalictic converter) - just knock on it. If there is sound like marbles jumping inside - you need new one. Specially if you hope to pass next emission test.

Overwise i cant think of anything that may produce such noise, apart from some stuff(pebble or alike) falling into fender and rolling about.

Shock bushings could be dying. Sounds like a ratlle/click going over bumps. Look at the top of the towers while jumping on the bumper.

My bushings were flat as pancakes and made that noise...albeit, after I put on OME's...the Cat. Convert started rattling...it never ends!!

If you have changed your shocks, that's where I would start. While you're down there, tighten your radius arms (also a common problem). You might want to jack your car up to see if it could be the wheel bearings. When you get it on jacks stands, shake your wheel violently. You should feel no play (or clunking). If all else fails, it could be your swivel balls. Then you have a big problem. Time consuming and fairly costly as you should replace all seals and bearings depending on the milage of your truck. Good luck.

Knock on the CATs first.
It's the fastest, simplest and most likely cause of "marbles in a cup" rattling from the drivers floorboard area.
Just do the knocking when the CATs are cold!!
