'95 disco, 175,000 miles. Bought used. Want to "fix" issues it has. Needs u-joints,exhaust leak, power steering leak,A/C moderately cold, cruise assembly broken, rear window washer disconnected....I live on an island OBX NC, 300 miles to closest LR dealer. Take to dealer to "fix" or search for shops locally HAHAHAHAHA?????? Have est. 3K to spend on the disco. LOVE it!!!!!! Have driven it approx. 20K as is with no trouble at all. Pretty good at "shade tree" mechanic stuff, not sure I am versed enough on the LR to tackle some of this stuff. Plus the time factor and getting the parts. Help appreciated!

U joints are pretty easy. Take the shafts off and take them to a machine shop and they will press in new ones for you. You can get the joints from some vendors in the the resources section. The exhaust can be taken care of at a muffler shop or yourself probably, the power steering leak might just be a hose, and you could do this, the rear window washer should be easy to reconnect, and just about anywhere can recharge your AC. Order the parts for the cruise and take it to a good independent.

hello there
the landrovers are just a easy to work on as any other car. so try to if you got the knowledge to do as much as possible to it your self! being where you are situated this is going to become common practice. i assume that this is a remote place where you live. anyway there is a tone of information here and on other boards. any problems that you encounter will be walked throught with everyone here. we will try to get the job done as best that one can over the net.
hope this helps

Chris I have a 95 d1. when I bought it the cruise didn't work. Found a split vacuum line at the T trimmed it stuck it back on and it works great. Your's may have a different issue but check the the vacuum hoses first. they split with age and heat. it took about 5 mins to fix including finding the T which was next to the abs on the drivers side fender under the hood. good luck it's nice to see high milage discos out there.

cheers Andy

BTW my cruise problem is the assembly on the steering column, not a vacuum hose???? Planning on just replacing the assembly.

Bolt on perfomance mods.............how about bolting in a GM small block. Seriously, bolt on performance mods for a Disco are never worth the money. For your cruise, go further. Does the orange light come on? The steering controls have been the same on Discos since 94 and Freelanders. You should be able to find a used one if need be.

yes, the orange light on the dash mounted switch comes on but one of the plastic pieces that covers the steering wheel mounted switch is gone and I think it is just not allowing it to make a connection. obviously I can't get a light to come on near the speedo or anything. Thanks, learn something new every time I check back.

That all sounds like easy stuff to fix on your own. Get yourself a workshop manual (I got mine on CD from Ebay for like $20) and tackle things one at a time. Research how to do the job, and learn which there are upgrades for. MOre than likely, as you accomplish each job you will find 3 or 4 more things that you want to do.
Find a friend that knows some stuff about fixing cars, and ,of course, keep posting here.
Learn to use the archives section.
Avoid the dealer at all costs. Find a garage near you that you trust and have them check everything over to find things that you may have missed.
As for parts, check the classifieds both here and LRX.com. People who are parting out are a godsend!
If you need the part right away, it is nice to have Atlantic British and Rovers North catalogs in your bathroom. (Makes for good reading material) Also, it will let you know how much you should be spending for used parts.

Before I got my Rover, I didn't know much about fixing cars. Now, I have changed or fixed something in almost every area of the truck, and am confident I can do pretty much anything on it. It is very mechanic-friendly.
