Not sure what my wife did but she screwed my transmission on my 97 D1 ( I think place din park before fully stopped) . It will only go into reverse or park. No forward gears will engage even with dif's locked. Is there anything minor I should be looking at to fix myself or am I S.O.L. in having something major done. If major what would be the most likely cause and what I'm I looking at $$ wise

Before you panic, (wouldn't blame you if you did) is the film where the shifter runs broken? Mine did and one of my wonderful two boys dropped a little rock down there and of course stopping the lever from shifting. Found a neat little tool at Sears that allowed me to reach in and grab it....
Last use of that tool was to pull a mouse nest out of the V of the engine........

Hi Chris, I'll check that when I get home today. Would not be surprised as I always find pennys in my cig. lighter from my kids blowing the fuse. If that is loose what should I be looking for in there? There is no grinding or other weird sounds it just wont engage.

Micheal, I dont think it would have done damage as extensive as taking out all of the forward gears unless she put it in going more than say 10 mph. Even then I can not see this taking them all out, although something would have to break. I would imagine you have a broken linkage of some sort which is not allowing the shifter to engage drive. Will the lever go all the way back? If you take apart the console you should be able to inspect the linkage. If something is broken inside the transmission then I would think you are not sitting pretty. Poor wifey, look what she did now. Never let a mad woman behind the wheel. Dont you know that?

The "park" trans lock pin is only about the size of an eraser on the end of a pencil, I doubt if it snapped off and caused it to only move the shift lever to reverse and back. I agree it might be linkage or something simple. just my two cents, good luck!!

Thanks Matt and Ron I'll look into that. What happened was we live on a large hill with a stop light on the bottom. Somehow the cruise control wire loop came undone and got cuaght on the trottle cable and started to drag her into uncoming traffic from a stop. She was being pulled forward at less then 5 MPH when she had to place in park to avoid going into uncoming traffic. After realizing no gears were working she coasted to the side of the road called me in which I put it in reverse to drive home a few miles. The transmission has never given me issues before.

ARGHHH! she went through neutral and reverse into park while moving!!!!
Sweet mother of .....
Its too late now....the damage is done. There is no way to fix this other than going to a ZF specialist and pulling the box. You may be looking at a new box.....
She must feel bad....but shes in one piece and thats all that matters.
