So as mentioned in a previous thread, I think I may have a bad cat converter -- over small bumps and speed bumps I can feel a rattle under my feet (although I'm not sure I would describe it as "marble in a cup"). When I bang on the cat it doesn't do much...

If my cats are bad to what extent can I keep driving on them? I don't have time to get them replaced before I head out on a trip this weekend...

you should be okay, Felix.
The worst that (I know) could happen is all the stuff in the cat melts down or breaks into chunks and either plugs the cat or flies downstream and gets lodged in muffler and resonator. But even in this case the engine will run (but may throw the CEL on).

Felix I ran about three weeks on a bad cat..I replaced one @ a time right then left(the repair job was about 395.00 for the right and 270.00 on the left or you can by a whole new y pipe) I was told that it can get stuck in the muffler as Peter pointed out!
Best , Melissa

i ran for almost a year on a rattling passenger side cat. even passed emissions with it. rattling finally got to me and i cut the honeycomb out. then, realized would need to pass emissions again, so i replaced the y-pipe for a new one.

I might be wrong but I bet your cats are fine. Take it to a good muffler shop (not a chain) and then get another opinion. Midas assured me my cats were bad, claiming they were spewing chunks downstream to the muffler, causing it to fail. I was at the shop because their muffler was bad after 1 year, but it was warranteed. They gave me an 600 estimate. I then went to a good muffler shop that has a good pipebending machine, and a guy with 10 years of custom pipe work. He told me my cats were fine (they're stainless). New muffler, custom tail pipe up high (in case I ever really do go wheeling) and no resonator $165. The rattling turned out to be a bad gasket in the Y pipe, and heat sheild. FWIW

My vehicle is emissions exempt, as it's registered in a rural county with no requirements, so I suppose I'll just run this one into the ground...
