To start off with, I have a 4.0 Disco 1-1998. At first I thought it was the battery then the starter. I took both off then checked them. They were fine. I put them both back on. I then turned the key to on position, jumped the starter terminals and the vehicle started. That worked six different times as I took it to different people to help figure out what is wrong. But now when you jump the starter terminals it just turns over without starting. And I still don't know what is wrong with the vehicle. Thanks for any help in advance.

Check the fuse box under the hood. See if you have any blown fuses.

Thanks Whylie, and Will. I have checked the spark plugs, coil and fuses. But still no fire. I was wondering if there was a relay somewhere in the starter system that might be the culprit. Like there is on some cars.
Thanks again for any help.

Digdug,

What about your alternator? Possibly there isn't enough juice in the battery to crank the engine over but the boost from the cables give it enough. Has the battery been recharged often or ever completely drained?

There is a shift-lock relay; car won't start or shift into R or D if this goes out. But this doesn't seem to be your problem. Definitely sounds electrical- I'd check (or have someone check) the following:
-wiring from alternator
-drop in a new battery (good time to upgrade to the Optima red top if you haven't yet)
-fuel pump connections- if the engine's not getting fuel, it will turn over but not start.

Don't know if this helps or not- this is definitely a head-scratcher.

Good luck to you.

First where is this inertia switch located. To answer some of the other questions it has plenty of battery to spin starter. I had been jumping it at the starter termenals under right side of engine. Not at the battery and the alternator is also working. I now am not getting fire at spark plugs or coil. Is there a relay for the starter.
Thanks again.

Ok - it's not the inertia switch. Sorry.

Have you checked your brake switch (the one behind the brake pedal)?
Do a search on brake switch.

Have you checked you battery cables?

Last year I had the same problem, and after doing all the above checks, found that the Positive cable had corroded down the middle. Not enough current to do more than make the relay click.

A new cable fixed it. Also make sure that all the battery and ground terminals are sound and making good contact.

The brake switch is another good place to look.
