For those with a 95 RR 4.0, here is an interesting bit of info. A couple of weeks ago I was on my way home and the oil light flashes three times then stay on. This happens while I am on the expressway (travelling roughly 75 mph) and am hurrying to get to the roadside. However, as I am coming to a halt I hear slight knocking in the engine. I shut down the car ASAP. I get out and check under the hood. There is oil and considering the mileage, I suspected the oil pump has gone out. Now then, I get the car towed home and start making some calls. Several of our "rover expert aftermarket suppliers" agreed that they thought it was the oil pump, which cost a good bit for a 4.0. I then called a friend who happens to work as a tech at Rover. He said he doubted it was the oil pump. He thought the oil draw tube was clogged. Sure enough, I pulled the pan and the screen on the end of the freaking draw tube was completely packed with silicone. Apparently the person who put on my oil pan at the factory got alittle crazy with the gasket sealer and over the years it built up in the draw tube. So, to make a long story shorter, I cleaned it out, pulled one of the valve covers just to check the lifters and such, then, filled with oil and upon starting the engine ran like nothing ever happened. All it cost me was $3.50 for more gasket sealer (not liberally applied) and more oil. Could have cost me several hundreds of dollars. I have since run the car for over 2000 miles and not a leak from the pan(and yes there is oil) and the engine runs great. The point of this is just to let others out there that might have a problem and suspect the oil pump to check the inexpensive stuff first. It really pays. |
