yesterday the weather was really nice out, high 70's, here in northern cal. so i made the mistake of driving around with the windows down and the radio off. so now i discovered a new noise coming from my disco.

i have found that when i turn relatively sharply to the right and then turn back to center that on the return to the center i get a high pitched whine noise. now i didnt do a very thorough study as to how much whine i get by going the other direction but i did notice it most predominantly when the wheels comes back to straight from turning right.

i checked my PS fluid and it was full, not dark or couldy or anything. so what could this be? i am pretty sure my steering dampener is craped out but its been that way for a while and this noise is new.

any help well be appreciated.

A pump on its last tour. Ot some odd reason or another there is air in your ps system and you need to bleed it.

Turn the radio back on, problem solved....:-)

Seriously though if you know the Steering Dampner is bad, that may cause a noise when coming back together....first thing I would do is chock the back wheels, lift the front and see if you get the same noise without pressure on the tires.

I had this issue with my '95 Disco and '95 Land Cruiser. I tried the Lucas Power Steering Stop Squeak and I was surprised how well it worked. The squeaks are gone in both vehicles and the steering response has improved in my Land Cruiser. You might give it a try before replacing your pump. I’m also a big believer in replacing fluids every few years in the brakes and steering systems even if they are function properly. Preventative maintenance saves money and breakdowns in the field.

Is there a bleed valve or good low point on the PS system? Guess I'll have to check it out.

does Lucas make a "stop squeek" for power steering or do they just make a stop leak?

No stop squeak unfortunately...Try bleeding the box first to rule out air in the lines.

today on my drive home i was listening for the whinning sound again. its seems like it became more prevelent towards the end of my drive. i was hearing it a lot towards the end it seemed to be happening while i would decelerate in traffic. after i got off the freeway my drive is pretty much straight up hill for 2 or 3 miles and i barely heard it at all.

one thing to note is that the brkes on my right hand side have also started to squeek really bad.

a second thing i have noticed just recently and this may just becuase it has been unseasonably warm this week. but the engine fan noise that kicks on first thing in the morning and goes off after about a block. has been coming on more than usual. forgive me for not know what fan this is but im hoping someone can tell me waht it is and if its normal and if it could have anything to do with the whinning noise.

Jason, this is just a guess, but have you checked your S-Belt and the tensioner. I would also check all pulleys and such with the motor running via a mechanic stethescope (spelling) or a long screw driver (place handle next to ear) and listen for bad bearings or grinding sounds.

You may have a bad pulley or the power steering pump may be starting to go.

As far as the fan goes, if you are running A/C, the electric fans will come on with the A/C the Clutch fan should stay on all the time, but will work harder as it reaches a higher temp.

Hope this helps,

Joey

2 PEOPLE.

On the top of the box you will see a bleeder. You will need to loosen the outer nut in order to turn the bleeder screw.

YOU WILL NEED PERSON 1 DOING THIS.

PERSON 2 WILL NEED TO BE IN THE TRUCK TURNING THE WHEEL FROM COMPLETE END TO END AND HOLDING IT AT EACH FULL EXTENSION. with the truck running

The pump at this point should becoming quiter the ps fluid should be coming out with no air bubbles.

Some trucks 2 turns and its bled. Others we have spent 15 mins on.
once it is bled tighten up.

With engine running open bleed screw on top of the steering box until fluid comes out. You might want to turn from lock to lock and reblead to make sure all of the air is out.

Dont confuse the bleeder with the backlash adjuster. Some overseas vehicles dont have a bleeder.
If you turn from lock to lock a few times, turn off engine. Wait 20 mins and lock to lock again. This allows bubbles to settle in top of reservoir.
