If I put a 4.0 in a 94 D1, do I need a new ECU? And if so, are there any other things to worry about, such as transmission ECUs not working properly?

Thanks muchly,

Dean

You will need the 14CUX ECU. The transmission is the same through '99 D1's. With a 4.0 from a D2 you will want to revert back to the '94's pan since the D2 does not have a bell housing cover and the bolts appear different.

BTW - I still have my 4.0 and I need to get it out of my driveway.

Ill assume you know this already, but youll also need a 3.9 or a 4.2 cam. I used a 4.2 as it makes a bit more power.

Curtis,

Ok thanks for the info. It will be some time before I make a decision on the one I have right now, but if its still available in a month or two I might be very interested.

Gil - why do I need a new cam? You mean if I keep the old heads or what?

the bosch 4.0 shortblock, assuming your getting a new one, has no distributor and the cam has no distributor drive. Even if its an older GEMS 4.0 block it wont have the drive. the older cams, ie 3.9 or 4.2 have the distributor drive.

If you put the 4.0 short block in you are going to be using your timing cover/pump, oil pan, distributor and a new chain. You are also going to be using your intake, heads etc. I would have the heads reconditioned which will run you around 2-250 depending on shop. YOU WILL BE USING YOUR 3.9 14CUX ECU.
A short block is your best option if your problem is isolated in that area...very cost effective and a nice swap.

Ok so Will, Gil says there's no dissy drive on the 4.0 cam, would I also need to swap my existing cam into the new engine, if I do as you say?

A short block does not include the cam. You will use yours or you can buy one.
A short block includes a Crank, Rods, Pistons, Bearings and Rings.
