If any readers out there have read, I have a 95 disco with 265/75-16 MTR's. Today I wanted to do a little wheelin' and got stuck in a ditch. I aired down to about 18 psi and finally got out of the ditch. After that, I aired down to 8 psi (on stock rims) and made it through the ditch and other ditches every time. No real serious wheeling but was very interesting.

Airing down = more surface area + less ground clearance + more chance of sidewall puncture + better chance of not getting stuck.

Don't know what I am getting at here. Some sort of equation or something.

Glad you got unstuck. I had to have my buddy in a Grand Cherokee pull me out the other day.
I hate that.

8 psi is extremely low! Watch out for the bead coming off and getting crap in the tire. Its happened to me in mud twice now even at 30 psi. I think it was a root or something very solid that I couldn't see below the water.

Yeah,
Sidewall damage is true to happen when aired down. But traction increases are GREAT.
Usually, on my Daily Driver with 245/75 16 Scorpions AT I go to 8psi in the desert and have YET to pop a bead in 2 years of weekly venturing. I drive CAREFULLY over rocks, and usually wheel FAST on the sand (thinking of ditching the Disco and setting up a pre-runner truck!).
On my trail truck I go to 6psi with 35x10.5x15 Simex, and that has proven to be the best for these tires which take a LOT to bulge. Different terrain than desert, meaning that I need both traction AND clearance.
I HATE to advise people on what pressure to run, since it is all SUBJECTIVE. Its a trial and error thing. One thing is constant though, IF you wanna air down, better have a STRONG compressor or a tank to air up AND if you are going below 15psi, better have a tank to re-seat the bead.
Yesterday we were 9 trucks in the desert all deflated and my single 3,500psi tank filled up ALL 36 tires AND still had some breath in it to dust the inside of my truck in the evening...scuba tanks rock! (whole set-up for 135$)

Nadim, scuba tanks are easy to come by on Ebay but where and what type of valves did you use. Where did you get them and where do you have them refilled?
I think the power tanks are a bit too expensive, especialy when I have other things I need.

Sounds like Nadim has some good tricks up his sleeve. Please give us more details on your scuba tank setup.

Dean, I know 8 psi is very low. I was just experimenting a little right beside my house. I had never tried airing down that low and I thought it was very interesting. Even with the 5000lb + disco the sidewall bulge was only moderate. Of course I couldn't see each wheel as it was weighted going over obsticles. As for the scuba tank, I had checked into getting a small tank from a welding supply shop. The guy said $100 for a tank (which you just exchange for another) and about $50 I think for a pressure reducing valve (which you keep and put on each tank you get) It wasn't very much to exchange for a filled tank of co2 or some other inert gas. I don't have any idea how long one will last but I think I'll go this route as an addition to a compressor.
