OK, so never mind the previous(now deleted) post about my "electric cooling fan". Sometimes it actually pays to open the hood before asking questions, DUH!. So the disco has a engine driven fan(who'da thunk)with a viscous clutch, Are these prone to failure? Or could it be something else up front thats making a "bearing about to go" sound? I had the "idler pulley" recall done last year, does anybody know which idler it was? The one over the to left or the one right under the A/C ? I know this is pretty vague but any insight would be appreciated. 2000 Disco w/ 56K. Should the fan be engaged at start up on cold morning? |

Dave, I had to replace my fan clutch about 2 months ago. I'm not sure if they're prone to failure as I don't hear about it very often but it did go on me and it sounds like a very loud transmission whine from the inside of the vehicle. Mine's a 98 D1 so not sure about the D2s.

I replaced the fan clutch on our 98 D1 last weekend. It was wobbly and started to make a metallic type noise that wasn't there before. Take off the fan cover and have a look see. Try to wobble it (with engine off of course). If it wobbles it is bad. It's easy to replace with the right tools (ie fan clutch removal kit) I purchased the fan clutch from Nathan (great price and fantastic service). LR wanted around 400 for the part alone. Nuts. |

I'm also getting a loud whine from the engine now. It wasn't there before and now my 4.6 V8 sounds like a riceburning 4 banger. It's directly related to engine rpm. I had a little submergence 2 weekends ago and it's been like that ever since. The service engine soon light recently came on so I'll be taking it to the dealer on Mon but just wanted some ideas from you guys. |

Thanks for all the replies. While i think I may still have a failing fan clutch, the noise I have is from the air pump bearing(s) going away. Chris answered my question on the P1416 OBD code as being for a high current draw for the pump. Thanks again you guys ROCK! |
