I used to drive a Hummer now I want a Discovery. I need some good general advice about my pending purchase of a 1999 Discovery Series 1 (loaded with all the goodies). I have no experience what so ever with land rover and there's only 1 dealer for about 600 miles who happens to be 4 hours away from where I live. I can deal with the inconvenience of driving the distance for service etc. and an extended land rover warranty puts most of may worries to rest. However, I'd like to know what advice you would offer to someone about to join the ranks of discovery owners. My last venture into the world of exotic "SUV's" was a '95, 4 door, hardtop Humvee and while it's offroad prowess was staggering it was NOT a practical "every-day" family ride.....for a million reasons!.....it was a love/hate relationship all the time and I'm affraid of buying a discovery based on my emotional attachment to the idea of owning one. The decission to buy a discovery is as much my wifes as my own and it's one of the few vehicles we both really love. We hate the Mini-van we're currently driving and want to escape the dismal existance of mini-van suburbanites but we need 7 passanger room to haul our family and luggage when we travel. We need a vehicle with longevity - we want to get 6-7 years min. out of the 99 model we're looking at....is that reasonable? We don't want a tempermental vehicle!!!......how's the discovery?....is it expensive to maintain? Is the series 1 any better or worse than the others out there? If so what discoveries are good vs. bad?.

The price for the 1999 series two is $19,900.00 with 30,000 miles on it...is this good? ( it has the extra seats/bush bar/PIAA lights/running boards etc, etc, etc. I have no interest in owing one the the flimsy "SUVs" out there.....most of the junk on the market is for people who's idea of off-roading is parking on the grass at the country club. If seen my share of hardcore off-roading and know how easy it is to "break" a truck. My hummer was certainly up to the challange! and while I don't expect to traverse the woods with the same reckless abandon in my discovery I need to know where the hype ends and the real capabilities begin....and will these abilities hold up over 6 or 7 years.....especially with lots of winter driving!. Mercedes M class seems soft in the off road department, BMW X5 has a leg up on the M class but the discovery seems serious about off roading......how much pampering does it need to maintain its integrity?. I just can't afford to make a bad decision this time. The hummer was not a truck I could afford to own and the family needs say go by another mini van.......Please help! Thanks for any help!!! :)

There's a similar thread in the tech section...look under 'What years D1 should I get'.

bob, the disco will last if you take care of it. i can not see it haveing more problems than a hummer but certainly more than a toyota.

a discovery can go anywere you went in your hummer. just check the video downloads for a taste.

since you will really be using your 3rd row seating i might suggest you find a series 2 discovery because there rear seats are forward facing and much safer.

oh, 600 miles to the dealer? where are you located.

This year at the Uwharri Safari, there was a Disco there that was trailered in behind a Hummer. The Hummer never left the campsight. After comparing the size of the disco tho that of the Hummer, then seeing the amount of room on the trails, I see why it stayed parked. I don't think it would have been able to go where we went.
I have always wanted a Hummer, but after seeing that, I'll stick with my smaller, more maneuverable Rover.
I think you will be pleasantly suprised with the off-road capability of the Rover. It is just the right size. Bigger than a Jeep, yet can go all the same places.
One word of advice, though...Stay Away From the Dealer for any non-warranty work!
They are not any harder to work on than any other vehicle. Your local mechanic should be able to do anything on it.
As for reliability, mine has 100,000 miles on it, and I an looking forward to the next 2 or 300,000. Very good truck.
