I'm looking to buy a 2000 Discovery 2 this week, and would like to ask a few questions, hopefully with out pissing anyone off on this site off. I want to start by saying I think from what I've seen so far that it's an awesome designed truck. But why are there so many sites dedicated to bashing this truck? All I read is that it's not reliable and cost big dollars to repair and is always in the shop. I've been reading some real horror stories about them. All the consumer mags don't have any history on this truck. Can someone give me some feed back on this trucks reliability? I'm not going to be a hard core off road driver like I guess the truck is designed for, but I will be doing some and also do a lot of winter driving in the mountains. I was hoping to get a go anywhere truck what will also be trouble free. |

Bill, a couple of other things about the D2 vs. the D1 that I didn't mention before. D2 has electronic traction control to supposedly make up for no CDL (in stock form). The D2 with CDL *and* ETC is a formidable combination. Also, be careful with the D2 "performance package", specifically ACE. If you plan on modifying (big lift, etc) the D2 for "hard core off road driver like I guess the truck is designed for", then don't get ACE because removing the sway bars is all or nothing as ACE is an expensive active torsion bar system, not easily removed should you want that option later on. You might consider a later MY (98,99) D1, there seem to be some very good deals on them. |

BUy it. You will be pleased. I have 100,000 miles on it. Apart from a few alternator issues and a bad injector, it has been trouble free. Yes...parts can be expensive, but not if you know where to look. When I replaced my clutch, it was actually cheaper than when I did my Toyota's. Of course, the dealer wanted more for just the parts than I paid for parts and labor together. |

Bill, there are a lot of stigmatisms (sp?) out there regarding Rovers. They have had their problems in the past, and unfortunately people tend to remember the bad things they hear. I've got a '00 DSII with 44K miles, and other than the few recalls that were done while in for scheduled service, I have had no issues whatsoever. If you're after a multi-purpose vehicle that is safe and well-made, you're looking in the right place. The QC for Rover has come a long way in the last decade. |
