Anyone watch it? or should I say anyone know what it is?

Okey, I know, it is not popular in the US. But since we drive/love British truck, I guess at least someone would love this sport? (anyone see the logic here?) C'mon, this is the real football (which they actually use foot more than hand)

I am crazy about this... didn't sleep last night to catch 2 games... and at work at 7:30am without any sleep.

Hey, and let's not forget the Queen's Jubilee celebration! My good English pal says her dog is under the bed from so many fireworks and if one more person says, "Have a great Jubilee", she's going to scream. Seems even some Brits have their limits on some British traditions!

Speaking of Brits, where's Horness been lately?

Karen :)

You know what's really sad (about me) is that on Friday I was offered free VIP tickets (value approx $1000 each) , free hotel and free transportation and some help towards the airfare (all to Korea) - still had to turn it down! Life sucks sometimes....

Hi,
i - as a lot of people in the ROW - watch the world cup.
I think Football (american soccer) is a nice sport, and play it, too. It is not a shame for me.
By the way, WC takes place every 4 years, every time in a different country. Few countries don't participate to classify in this cup.
The WC story is approximately 85 years old...
Scuse me for the extension of this post
Regards

I can never understand the comment that soccer/football is so gay. What part of it is gay anyway?
Because they don't wear tight pants/shorts?
or because the players needs to run for 45 minutes before the break, instead of every few seconds for the real man to break? (or even switching people)
anyway, I love the game, but I don't wear Banana Republic, or drive a VW/BMW. :)

hmmm....I always thought putting your hand on someones ass and asking for the ball was a little strange....

I prefer a man's sport: rugby.

gay is kind of a loose term used to describe a less than "manly" activity. i should say that soccer is an endurance GAME but its like basketball and american football and baseball. i must say that i am impressed with those female soccer players they got guts, but the rest of it is just some guys playin with a ball and as i said if it cant kill you it aient a sport!
imho

oh and if i am not mistakin WC soccer sold out in its US appearance which is odd being that there has been some empty seats at some of the overseas venues. well at least that is what i have heard.

Rugby is a beautiful sport, with rich international story, too. We have to be thankful to UK for this two gentlemen sports, cheap to practice and easy to understand, worldwide.
As a banana citizen, i´m free and don´t need to practice this or that sport to show if i´m a right man ;-)

Soccer runs in my blood, but I only catch a few of the MLS games during the season. The World Cup however, being only every four years with only the best of the best brings out the fanatic in me. I will be waking up MUCH earlier than usual to watch the USA play Portugal at 4:55 am. For those of you who may be interested, but haven't watched much soccer, there will be a classic match up this Saturday at 1pm EST on ABC; England vs. Argentina. Both are among the top teams in the world and have a bitter rivalry both on and off the field...

Britain defeated Argentina in a war over the disputed Falkland Islands 20 years ago. Argentina goalkeeper Pablo Cavallero recently said "It's the match all Argentines want to play, those who lost friends or relatives in 1982."

Argentina beat England 2-1 in the 1986 World Cup quarter-final with one of the goals being Maradona's infamous 'Hand of God' goal. Replay's clearly showed he used his hand to 'help' the ball in (This would be akin to Tiger Woods dropping the ball in the hole with his hand at the 18th hole of the Masters for the win). There is no instant replay in soccer though, and the goal stood. He followed up that goal with a second, one of the best in the history of the tournament.

Leading up to this years tournament an Argentine player injured England's captain and arguably best player in a club match, breaking his foot and putting in doubt his ability to lead his country in the cup.

In a nutshell, if you are interested in seeing a good soccer game, this has all the makings for a classic. If not, then you're probably not reading this post anyway... ;)

Should be a good match (Eng vs Arg), just hoping England can get a win :)

To add to the history bit, England played Argentina in the 1998 World Cup, which was also quite eventful.
The english captain (david beckham) was sent off in the second half so an incident not too different from the recent Brazil Turkey game where Rivaldo faked an injurly, and a turkish player was sent off.
The eng arg game went to penalties in the end, where England lost ;(

The World Cup is looking pretty good at the moment tho, fortunately the earliest game for us in the UK has been at 6.15am so the time difference isnt too bad.

Mike,

If potential fatality is your determining factor for what constitutes a sport then consider this morbid fact...

When the US hosted the World Cup in 1994 we beat Columbia, a traditionally strong team, thanks in part to an own goal by Colombian defender Andres Escobar. A week later he was killed by a Columbian soccer 'fan'.

sad but true.

I will be watching the US game and the eng arg game. it is going to be great.

Mike, I still don't understand why you think that "if it cant kill you it aient a sport". a bit strange to me. So a sport is something that can kill you? But well, it is your opinion. I don't think basket ball/base ball will kill you. You may get serious injury in a football game but I don't know if many are killed in a football game.

Jason, you should also count those fans who got killed in football match roits, stadium fire, and those who got killed in the packed stadium. Oh well, they didn't really play the game thou.

afaik nobody in the UK has ever 'died' in a football match, although one player famously played a whole game unknowly with a broken back :o
^ better edit - "soccer match" :/

How 'bout lacrosse? Lacrosse is a real man's sport, but I don't think anybody has died since the the early North American inhabitants used to use the sport as organized tribe warfare.

***USA vs Portugal WORLD CUP RESULTS***
***DO NOT READ IF YOU TAPED THE GAME***

After not getting to sleep until 1 am my alarm rudely awoke me at 4:40 am. Dreary eyed and exhausted I stumbled to the couch and flipped on the tv. Less than ten minutes later I was wide awake and glued to the screen. What a game!!! The US played with heart and skill and beat the 5th ranked team in the world!!! Argentina vs. England still has the makings of a great match, but World Cup journalists are already calling this match one that will live on in World Cup history for some time and was by far the most entertaining of the Tournament so far. The US National team made the front page of every major sports web site I could find. The game will be replayed on ESPN2 at 3 pm EST today. Tape the game if you can't watch it then. It is a classic.

GO USA!!!

I browse fifaworldcup.yahoo.com as well. Other than that, the sites I visit most often are:

www.soccernet.com - this is more of a traditional news oriented site with articles and game reviews.

www.bigsoccer.com - this is more of a bulletin board site, like discoweb.

hope these help,
jason

what did you think of the game?

Jason,
i saw the game and think that USA is each day in better level, but still far from favorites.
Next match will be not easy and a good result to wait is to equal, since Korea is the better asiatic team, and domestic player.

Both national(when i could get the time off work) and regional (mid-west&great plains). Spent most of my time running CCS and GLRRA events because they had covered all the tracks near Chicago, Blackhawk, Gingerman, Gratten, Road America, Putnam. Putnam park is a great track, except for the bumps on the from straight, the back twistys sure do test your ability to read a track, glad to see you are still with us after your experiance. All time best track road america of course. I still get a bad itch to be out there dragging my knee.

i completely understand your desire, peter, my wife cant seem to understand how something that almost killed me keeps my mind and my heart, i guess you have to had raced to see. i did race ginerman and gratten as well i really love gingerman in the rain, it like putnam was a equalizer when wet, but i dont really remember any bumps on the surface at putnam, but after the crash there are alot of things i really dont remember. i made many good freinds while at the tracks, i suppose that is what i miss the most. we would rent a hotel room and by morning there was twenty or so racers passed out all over the floor. we all had the same risks and responibilty (family, work etc) so it made the whole experence like a family outting versus an actual competiton. oh well like all the best things it had to come to an end. but i would like to take a moment and thank my past sponsors, Avon Tyres, Motel, Galfers, Competiton Acces., Hydrosports, Race Tech, Simons Tarven and most of all my wife Kim, who always held back her tears and her fears and let me chase a dream.

I have to say that I am one of the "gay" people that keep up with world cup soccer.
Also, I played soccer for about 10-12 years and I remember once, as a kid, a good friend of mine who's father was a huge football fan, thus, he had been playing football his whole life, decided to try out for soccer (we were about 16 years old at the time and this guy was not some big fat linebacker). Needless to say, my freind quit after a week. He couldnt take all the constant running and the required coordination to handle a ball and sprint at the same time. Also, soccer is one of those few sports that ANYONE can play. You see world class players who are 5' to 7' tall, weight is not a big factor. Its coordination and speed (for some positions) that win the games. Just my 2 cents.
