Can anyone recommend any good back country trails in the Sierras that are easy to get to from the Bay Area?. I'm looking for something with great views, few people and something a stock D1 can handle. If you have one please provide directions.

Thanks

Mike

Lance,
I used to live in Stockon..... I worked for UOP. But Seattle beconed me back to the rain and cold :) I still have friends that live in Davis and Stockton that I visit pretty regularly. Unfortunatly for quick trips I fly down. Though this summer I am hoping to make a trip down in the Rover and hit some easy trails with one of my friends who has an old Fj60. I heard that there is a LR dealer in Rockland! I guess Granite Bay/Folsom will have a few more Rangies going bling bling :)

As I'll be taking my family with me so views would be nice to please the other half. I'm basicly looking for secluded spots south of Highway 70 and north of highway 120. Something with good challenges a stock D1 can handle.

Thanks Mike

Mike,

Start by getting Tony Hugel's Book:

"California Byways, Sierra Edition."

Most of the drives are very easy, but it describes the basic areas very well and gives you ideas about cool highlights such as lakes, ghost towns, mountain biking trails, etc.

Next, get a set of USFS maps of the areas in the Hugel book and you will see how many interesting side routes there are near the trips he describes.

Then, go to the NCRC website and subscribe to their e-mail list. Ask the question there and you will get lots of suggestions. Also check out the "links" area of the NCRC site. Chris Dow (nice guy) and Alex Cooper (another nice guy) have lots of Sierra trip info and photos on their sites.

My favorite area in the Sierras (for Rovering)is between Tahoe and Yosemite.

The first section of Blue Lakes trail (from Spicer Lake to Lake Alpine)can be run unscathed by a novice in a stock Disco if you have a gentile right foot and decent spotting. Beautiful sceenery.

The second section (HWY 4 to Blue Lakes Rd.)is tougher and I ran it last year with stock suspension and WAY overloaded, resulting in some underbody dents. A lightly loaded disco might get through unscathed with good spotting. It is one of the the toughest trails you might try in a bone-stock Disco. This route is a classic.

Anybody done "Barney Riley Jeep Trail" near Markleeville?

Hey rich the Barny Riley Trail is on my list to do this summer. I heard it is not that hard. The trail that goes from spicer to alpine is called slick rock trail, the trail from four to Blue lakes is deer valley. I think you did pretty good on those trails last summer. That was a fun trip.
