How often does the timing chain need replacing and how hard is it to do on a 1991 range rover. Do they go bad or stretch/break on rovers and cause issues or are they tough and worry free ?

thnx

Unless you're pulling the engine out, don't worry about it-

timing gears & chains do wear out!
the cam gear is nylon & a POS design
@150k mi is all its good for.
a good time for replacing it is when
changing the waterpump as most of the
stuff needing to be removed is already done.
do not use the OE style gears!
rockwell & crane both make upgraded sets
selling for less than the OE crap.
make mine double roller please!

Hmmm - guess all the people out there with 150K-300K on RRC's on original motors are all running without spinning their camshafts then! LOL

I am worried that if I don't change it out now it will break and cause top -end nightmares like on other vehicles like Honda. When deos the dealership say to change it out and when does it really need changed ;)

Alex - it is a timing chain, not a timing belt. You will not have valve/piston interference or camshaft breakage problems if you break a timing chain on a Rover (or most other SB V-8's for that matter) - very unlikely anyway. When they get old, they tend to stretch, but not break anyway.

Guess again there Mr Knowitall!
a spun timing chain can do valve damage.
& much worse damage to the rods & crankshaft,
if the offtime firing is bad enough
chunks can go flying!
(thats really bad!)
tech tip tyme;
take off the diz cap & rock the crankshaft
back & forth, if more than 20% is seen
in the crank marks before the rotor moves.
its timing set time.
