Used to be an Xterra guy, that ended recently with a job loss, and am looking at a 95 Disco, 157K, auto, leather, etc... As I don't know much about the disco world, I thought that maybe some of you guys might know what to look for as far as problematic areas and what-not. They are asking 4400, and she does have a dented right front fender, a leaky power steering hose, and a few other cosmetic imperfections. CV's, wheels, and tires are in good shape and the general lack of pinstriping suggests that she has seen little serious off road time. A recent tune up has been done. 157K is a lot of miles though. Any thoughts? |

Hello K Carlson, I'd say make sure to have it checked over by a mechanic first as the Discos usually need alot of love. My 96 has 107k and still runs like a brand new one, but oil changes and maintanance are performed regularly. I would say as long as she's been treated well you should be able to get another 60k-70k out of her as long as you treat her well. As far as the vehicle goes, you simply cannot compare it to any other SUV. It is a great vehicle to own and it is Very capable off road without any mods. Later.. RS |

Thanks rubisco. I am a mechanic, and plan on doing a number of tests before the purchase if the deal looks right. BTW, do you or anyone else know what the compression should be around? I plan on testing it tomorrow if I get a chance. Thanks in advance for any input on the compression and/or other disco issues! KC |

compression should be around 155-160, but with mileage in that area i am guessing you will be around 135 or even lower. from what i know and have been told having even compression is more important than having extreme differences in compression. get use to leakage on a disco. power steering is pretty common, but can sometimes be fixed with some new hoses. check the steering box for excess slop too. minor oil leaking from the pan is normal, as well as, valve covers. like the previous folks have said just have a look all over. check the swivels for leaking and rusting/pitting. maintenance is pretty simple on these trucks. i am sure you will have no problem working on it. just don't always go with OE stuff. you will find that out soon enough. new alt will set you back $600 from a dealer. rebuilt bosch will go for $250 or less. that kinda thing. my last disco had about 90K on it. not high mileage at all, but still drove great with the only major issue being a steering box. that was pricey. good luck. |

quite decisive too. sorta like the Tyson fight. lesson learned......don't pick a fight with a tree with a caliper over 3". that one was about 18". |
