hey guys, I have just purchased a 96 RR 4.0 and I found a couple things that could be normal but I still want to confirm. one, is the A/C system; it has been working on and off, and apperently it has to do with the hot weather here in El paso tx. I am having the same problems with my 99 Disco II. the difference is that on the RR, when I push the A/C button, the two fans in the front start making a lot of noise, and the A/C will work on and off. to me it sounds like the A/C is running out of gas, but will I need to replace the two fans to eliminate the noise?? also, when I hit the brakes sometimes it makes a noise and again it does on and off. the brakes are working fine altough I think I need to replace the pads, which make a different noise. is this noise normal as mentioned in a previous conversation? if normal, why does it do it on and off? your comments will be appreciated! A friend has a similar problem(97 RR 4.0),on hot days when the a/c is turned on,blower works but blowing hot air, compressor not engaged, then after a while after turning it on and off it starts blowing cold air and working properly. It is not a compressor issue, was just wondering if anyone experienced this problem and what the fix was.Are there temp sensors or relays or anything else that acts up on these vehicles?Any input on this problem would be greatly appreciated, thanks. |

Might be your compressor clutch. check if the compressor clutch (in front of compressor) is turning on and off by pressing the ac on/off button on the climate control unit, you should hear it and see it engage. If it is not engagaged then your compressor is not running and you will not get cold air. I had a similar problem, my clutch wouldn't engage becase the air gap between the clutch plates were too wide. I fixed it by using a pair of channel locks to decrease the distance between the clutch plates and all is working well so far. You can test to see if this is your problem by tapping on the front of the clutch plate with a wooden broom handle and if it engages then it might be an air gap problem. sanden.com has some info. |

what exactly did you do with the channel locks, just wondering how you did that and kept it evenly spaced all the way around, thanks... |

Use the channel locks to apply some pressure on the mounting points on the clutch plates, you are basically bending the mounting points so that the clutch plates will be closer together, just work your way around and get it as evenly spaced as you can, not going to be perfect but it is enough so that the clutch will engage, sandens website has some info on the air gap spacing. Too wide an air gap and the clutch will not engage. http://www.sanden.com/support/servicemanual/english/clutch.htm |

Two things to check: 1) Make sure there is at least 11.5V at the compressor clutch. There is a revised wiring harness to fix this. 2) There are some instructions on adjusting the clutch plate gap which I garnered from one of the rangie specific mailing lists on my website at http://www.cunningham.me.uk/offroad. |
